Shania Set For Super Bowl

International superstar Shania Twain will be among the artists performing during the AT&T Super Bowl XXXVII Halftime Show. The announcement of Twain's participation in the Jan. 26 extravaganza was made during ABC's broadcast of Saturday's National Football League (NFL) wildcard playoff games.

Super Bowl XXXVII will be held in San Diego's 70,000-seat Qualcomm Stadium, with kickoff set for 3 p.m. PT. The city previously hosted the NFL's championship game in 1998 and 1988.

"The AT&T Super Bowl Halftime Show is an important part of the Super Bowl and one of the most widely viewed entertainment events of the year," NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said in a statement. The halftime show will be executive-produced by Interscope/Geffen/A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine and Tenth Planet Productions' Joel Gallen ("America: A Tribute to Heroes," MTV Movie Awards).

While no other performers have yet been announced, it's safe to assume that many more are forthcoming. Last year's event in New Orleans boasted U2 as the halftime entertainment, plus a host of pre-game festivities that included performances by Paul McCartney, Mary J. Blige, Marc Anthony, Barry Manilow, Wynonna, Yolanda Adams, James Ingram, and Patti LaBelle. Mariah Carey was also on hand to deliver the National Anthem.

The entertainment circus was also notable for an interview McCartney did with Fox broadcasters, during which the former Beatle revealed plans for his first U.S. tour since 1993. His 2002 North American tour went on to be the highest-grossing trek of the year.

The Super Bowl is traditionally the most-watched event by 131.7 million Americans in the U.S., according to the NFL, watched all or part of last year's Fox broadcast, in addition to an estimated 800 million worldwide viewers. It was the fifth most-watched program in U.S. television history, ranked behind Super Bowls XXX, XXVIII, XXXII, and XXVII.

ggaaaaawwwddammit.

*big thumbs up to bowl game execs*
way to ruin a perfectly good football game.

then again, i suppose if radiohead ever agreed to do a halftime show for a large american football game, i'd just cry.
better to use the overrated [rather than expoiting talent] for a quick little song and dance to provide the drunken football fans with a little eye candy while the players rest.... whatever keeps the money rolling in.

I think the *real* question is - will she be wearing a sock on her arm?

If she doesn't, maybe Santana will!

Chicks, Santana, No Doubt To Rock Super Bowl

The Dixie Chicks, No Doubt, and Santana have been tapped to perform during the Super Bowl XXXVII festivities Jan. 26 in San Diego. The National Football League (NFL) has confirmed that the Chicks will perform the National Anthem prior to the game, while No Doubt's official Web site notes that the band will take part in the AT&T Wireless-sponsored halftime show. And NFL sources tell Billboard.com that Santana will perform with special guests during the pre-game show.

As previously reported, country artist Shania Twain will also be performing during the halftime show. Celine Dion also will reportedly be on hand to perform a rendition of "God Bless America" before the game, although the NFL has not yet confirmed her participation.

For the Dixie Chicks, the honor is something the group has been hoping to achieve for a long time. "For three years, we've been asking to perform 'The Star-Spangled Banner' at the Super Bowl," lead singer Natalie Maines told Billboard last month, when the group was in negotiations with the NFL.

"Anyone who tells you there's no pressure to sing the National Anthem 'live' to one of the biggest television audiences on the planet is not telling the truth," fellow Chick Emily Robison said in a statement today (Jan. 8). "Sure, I'm a little nervous, but we're all also very excited and honored for the privilege."

The Dixie Chicks are up for four Grammy awards, including the album of the year trophy for their latest album, "Home" (Monument/Columbia). Released in September, the set debuted at No. 1 The Billboard 200 and held the post for three consecutive weeks. The album has sold 3.8 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

For Santana, the performance will precede a world tour that's due to kick off Feb. 12 in Laredo, Texas. He'll be on the road in support of his namesake group's guest-laden Arista album, "Shaman." The set debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, and has sold 1.5 million copies in the U.S. No Doubt's latest, "Rock Steady" (Interscope), debuted in December 2001 at No. 9 on The Billboard 200, and has sold 2.4 million copies in the U.S.
