so i borrowed this last night from David and i had time to read one section, so i chose to read the Butthole Surfers part. OMG it was hilarious.

small things i didn't know:

* Gibby Haynes was an accountant (with an accounting degree working a large accounting firm)

* Gibby Haynes was one semester from earning his MBA when he dropped out

* Paul Leary's middle name is "Leary" - his last name is something else

* The band played under a billion pseduonyms until the title for an early song stuck as their name

* Their indie music was released by the same people/label who handled/launched Fugazi

if the remainder of the book is this good, then everyone should own it...heck i will have to buy my own copy

I really want to read the book but haven't gotten around to it yet. I sat in on a panel at last year's CMJ convention in which Michael Azzard spoke about writing the book. Very interesting and while I don't love the bands in the book I still think it's going to be a great read because you can substitute any band that you want for the bands in the book.

yeah i wouldn't say i love any of the bands in the book, but i am familar with most of them, maybe owning an album or two by several of them.

based on just the Butthole Surfers section it is worth owning.

and of course, Azzard has a book on Nirvana if that floats your boat more. ;-)

it's definitely a great read. I was into several of the bands in the mid-80s (the SST stuff) so I found it very interesting.
