i just realized that i am now working for a company that is owned by a company that is
publically endorsing a presidential candidate that i will not be voting for.
how does this make me feel?

i guess it's time to start taking stuff from work...

seriously, i feel like a loner here in my department, and i don't like it.

You and me both. Every single person at this newspaper is for Bush but me. I tried to write a column saying something positive about Kerry and the publisher refused to run it. Then I wrote a bipartisan column before I left for New York and they didn't run that either. The sad thing is that there are Kerry signs all over Marysville, but there is no one at the paper representing them. As more Columbus expatriots head into this town they will soon realize the paper is biased and will never subscribe. A resource of thousands they will not get. What you are left with are 80-year-old longtime citizens who will die soon. Then the paper gets bought out by a corporation.

I heard there was a memo sent out around the Dispatch offices after Kerry visited. Apparently when he walked into the room Dispatch employees and reporters erupted in applause. Something they didn't do for Bush - which didn't make Wolfe happy. At the hands of every newspaper is always an old white man stuck in the past.

I thought it was an endorsement for bush’s environmental agenda…wolves are bad, wolves will stare at you, we should kill the wolves and cut down their habitat because trees hate freedom.

i still think it was very fucking irresponsible for them to issue support either way. i mean, do tv stations endorse one cadidate or another?

I just heard a discussion about this on NPR a couple of days ago. Basically, t.v. and radio don't do endorsements because they use the airwaves, which are owned by the public. Newspapers are privately-owned, so they do.

Newspapers are terrorists. Like wolves. And trees. Bears are communists.

Even this paper in TEXAS that endorsed Bush last election is endorsing Kerry. The Dispatch should be ashamed.

interesting:

Quote:
The survey released yesterday by the Washington-based Project for Excellence in Journalism found that 59 percent of the stories that were primarily about Bush from Oct. 1-14 were negative in tone, compared to only 25 percent of the stories about Kerry. And while 34 percent of the Kerry coverage was favorable, a mere 14 percent of the president's coverage put him in a positive light. The survey examined 817 stories from The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Columbus Dispatch, and The Miami Herald; the evening and morning news programs on ABC, CBS, and NBC; PBS's nightly newscast, CNN's ''NewsNight With Aaron Brown;" and the Fox News Channel's ''Special Report With Brit Hume."

Maybe these stats could be attributable to the fact that 85% of what the president does are dipshit moves worthy of bad press?

Here is the endorsement. Because SNP won't be going to press before the election, the head honchos are in the midst of building an online forum for people to make comments.

considering that Oct. 1-14 probably doesn't include much about A) the discredited but oft-repeated Swift Boat attacks on Kerry, B) the positive spin for Bush coming off the Republican Convention at the beginning of September and C) the fact a lot of people get their "news" from pundits and talking heads.

i would like to see an a 6-month analysis after the fact, similar to the Bush/Gore comparisons in 2000, that showed Gore received much more negative press for false or inconsequential stories ('inventing the internet,''Love Story,'etc.) while the questionable Bush statements ('by far, the vast majority of my tax cuts go to the middle class,' 'two division not being ready for duty,' etc.) went unchallenged.

Have these actually been disproven? I was under the impression that the "questions" raised were "unprovable" either way, given "The Fog of War" and the amount of time since.

btw, Kerry handled this incredibly poorly.

They're discredited because their stories, both about themselves and the incidents they describe, have changed multiple times. I don't have the interest in dredging up the whole thing, I'm sure if Kerry gets elected John O'Neill will spend the next four years as he has spent the last thirty three - trying to get back at Kerry for completely embarrassing him on the Dick Cavet show while O'Neill was working for Nixon (a claim he has denied, despite the Nixon tape evidence).
