picked these up today from kyle…kinda stunned that th bonus material downloads are 128 (buried life)/192 (shot forth) kbps mp3 and that th accompanying album (first disc) downloads are 128. i thought we left that in 2002? packaging is gorgeous (really good photography/no pixelization in reproduction) and as is so uncommon with lp reissues, these are (thankfully) actually doubles that feature most all of th related b-sides as well. but where are th promised 'new liner notes'? all ya get is photos (cool and all) and lyrics (who gives a shit). i'd like to hear about th "creepy downtown burbank" recording studio and how beth became th singer after two other girls did demos with brad, etc etc. anyhow, they sound fucking excellent (tho even with th fact that they say 'reissues produced by brad laner' a lotta re-eq'ing was done, to th point where some of th very interesting overall original sound is gone - esp on b-sides like "world hello"…i wonder if brad never liked th sound - which would totally fuck up my impression of what he was going for back then - or if he didn't really have too much of a hand in th remastering, or if th old masters were fucked, or if he just decided to add a little low end…) and they're only $25 (unlike th KRAZY $40 single slowdive records - fuck that company very, very much) and i'm now not so bummed i sold all my originals many moons ago.

(#1 peeve, since yr asking…in th new 'less songs per side' double lp mastering, they separated th original last two songs on th first side of 'buried life'…that FUCKING RAN TOGETHER. wtf??)

obviously you all know how i feel about lorelei and swirlies (i.e. best american shoegaze ever) and tho i don't think they are better than medicine i also don't necessarily think of medicine as shoegaze either although they were like th only US creation band during that period (yes, shoegaze, like rockabilly, only existed for a very specific period of time). fuck a genre all day but in any case if you JUST GOTTA i'd say 'noise pop' will make me buy a record where 'shoegaze' like just might make me mention it to tristan. if i see him out. maybe.

Medicine pre Presley rules.

And speaking of Beth Thompson, do you have any idea what became of her career after Medicine? I did a brief google search but aside from an old myspace band page that appeared to be a new project I didn't really find anything.

Y'know...some of us are well aware of the fallacies the term "shoegaze" suggests....and still don't really give a fuck about using it.

i'm sure this is th stuff you found but i mean that's as current as 2009 and (creepcreep) th myspaces were logged into in nov 2011.

somebody from th band seems to be running this:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Medicine-Band/148976065123004

and a coupla months back i contacted brad via his bandcamp to see if he was gonna re-up his mix of 'her highness' and he got right back to me, so that wouldn't be th worst place to ask a question like yrs i'd guess.

these reissues are nice. it's good to have their version of til I die on wax.

with all of the american shoegaze talk lately, i haven't heard anyone mention the lilys "in the presence of nothing". not just on this board, but anywhere really. i feel like that was the first american shoegaze record.

that shiFt record is my favorite u.s. shoegaze album. shit, next to loveless and the second telescopes record, that's my favorite record from this genre.

it's definitely the most shoegaze(y) record ever made in america, but…

drop nineteens 'delaware' June 5, 1992
lilys 'in the presence of nothing' September 1992
medicine 'shot forth self living' September 15, 1992
swirlies 'what to do about them' October 6, 1992

(further's 'griptape l.p.' was released sometime in 1992 as well and that deserves a mention. if anyone's gonna call swervedriver shoegaze i'm gonna reserve th right to call further american shoegaze.)

anyhow, i'll be danged.

I didn't know that Drop Nineteens record came out before the Lilys. I never really investigated them.

it's surprising that they beat everyone to th punch because they're just riddled with second-tier-ness. a ripoff of a ripoff, if that. but they've got a few corkers in there. th ep full-band version of "my aquarium" and the single "winona" - both awesome. and their covers of "mandy" and "angel" are both - while in some sense offensive and cringe-worthy, by turns - pretty damned enjoyable to listen to when th mood hits ya.
