Pearl Jam was scheduled to play Stache's but didn't. Missing Stache's has a scan of an ad from (probably) the Columbus Edge that lists both Nirvana and Pearl Jam playing within a month or so of each other. They canceled the show after being invited to open the Red Hot Chili Peppers/Smashing Pumpkins tour (which hit Columbus).
They also had a date scheduled at Peabody's in Cleveland around the same time that they also canceled. However, they did make that date up after "Alive" had blown up and become huge. I had a ticket to the original show which was honored at the make-up show and it was awesome. The band Eleven opened up and some of the guys in Pearl Jam were out in the audience pogoing along to the songs. Don't know if you've ever been to the (now closed) Peabody's but there were pipes running across the ceiling and at one point Eddie Vedder jumped up, grabbed one of the pipes, and worked his way almost to the back of the club.
I *think* (but am not positive) that same week they played the Newport, maybe as a make-up show for the canceled Stache's show. It sold out quickly and I didn't get tickets but I lived on 12th not too far from the Newport so I stood behind the venue all day and was able to get everybody's autograph. Eddie showed up last, I think he said he had been record shopping at Singing Dog and Magnolia's (back when there was a south campus store). It was dark at this point and all he had was a ballpoint pen so he signed my CD single of "Alive" (a promo copy that had been sent out a few months before Ten came out) three times and said, "I'm sure one of those will turnout." I bet I could sell that CD for a few bucks now.
I met these two girls who had driven from Virginia just to go to the show and they arrived to find out it was sold out. One of them waited until the show started and then ran in one of the side doors. After the show, I drove them up to Stache's where Love Battery was playing. Unfortunately, at that point in time I didn't really know anything Love Battery so I didn't go with them. I found out later that Eddie Vedder went to Stache's after the show and joined Love Battery on stage for a few songs. Doh!
