Has anyone else gotten the book yet? I got mine about two weeks ago, finally made a batch last night. It worked out beautifully.

yeah, it came out the week of my b'day, so my girl pre-ordered it for me. i was so blown away with the book that before i even made my 1st batch i bought the iBook version as well, cuz it had 10 little awesome "how-to" videos that made me feel WAY more comfortable doing an ice cream recipe so drastically different than the one i've been cultivating for years. if you haven't yet i highly suggest giving jeni an extra 11 bucks and grabbing the i version as well. it's worth it just for the salty caramel video alone.

there's a thread on CU from the cat behind the videos . . .

http://www.columbusunderground.com/foru ... s-cookbook

and she has added a forum to her site since the book's release, and i'm already seeing it as a HUGE source of info & inspiration . . .

corgi, this is a repost from another site, but it's what i've been up to since i got the book . . .

Quote:
since the book dropped the week of my birthday, i KNEW i'd be getting a copy, and when i did i dutifully looked through the list of all the flavors, honestly trying to decide which i'd try 1st, but when it came down to it, there was only one choice. i'd loved the bangkok peanut since the first time i tried it years ago, but i've always HATED shredded coconut in sweets (blasphemy, i know) so i wasn't able to fully enjoy what should have been my favorite ice cream of all-time. and now i'd been handed the keys to the kingdom! so a coconut-less bangkok was the first batch. and it was amazing. i felt like i was on a first date with food. for the second batch, i took the suggestion of the coins of ginger and bruised lemongrass in the creams/coconut milk (and doubled the cayenne) and it was even more astounding.

and then it clicked . . . i wanted to take this all the way to the finish line of jeni's phad thai story from the book, and make a phad thai ice cream, with crushed peanuts and a reduced-down-to-syrup sriracha sauce swirl. that's going to be this week's project. i'll report back on the sriracha syrup experiment . . .

Sriracha syrup! Holy cow. Is that vegan? If so, what sort of sorbet do you think it would be good on? My sister-in-law is vegan and LOVES sriracha with a passion. Making her a sorbet with a sri-ri syrup would be amazing.

And yeah, that forum is good. I started reading it before I even got the book.

Thinking about making tweaking the Buckeye State and using spekuloos (Belgian spread that is peanut buttery in texture, but tastes like gingersnap cookies) instead of peanut butter. Mmmmm.

That made me think of Nutella. I think I'll be trying Nutella Ice Cream.

i've thought about this for a couple of days.
i'm pretty sure i have the best answer:

lime with ginger & a little cardamom.

and just use which-ever brand of sriracha she prefers, you'd know it was vegan then, and just reduce it by about a third (i'm guessing.) still haven't done it, but that's my plan. i figure it's already thick enough that you wouldn't need to reduce it any further than that. let it cool to room temp or cooler, and piping bag in a swirl of it as you pack it.

serve it with a sprig of cilantro. (or 5)

and if you don't try this, i'm gonna have to. the more i type about it the more awesome it sounds.

fuck, i think i have to go make more bangkok peanut right now . . .

well, its hours later and i went with a batch of an espresso variation on the black coffee ice cream. haven't decided if im adding any crunchies or swirls to it, or if i should just leave it as is.

hmmn, i DO have a spicy mayan chocolate syrup already around here. the cinnamon in it would swirl in nicely with this, and i wouldn't have to do anything from scratch this morning . . .
