I'm starting to think that Ben, who has spent his entire life on the island trying to prove his worthiness to Jacob, was never considered a candidate by Jacob because he's exactly the sort of island protector that MIB would have been if MIB'd gotten the job. A lot more cutthroat and decisive, prefering to make things a certain way than allowing other people to choose. I think Jacob wanted someone more like him.

I also think Ben has experienced a turnaround and I hope they don't kill him.

But Kate, yes, please kill Kate.

do you guys think that Allison Janney was really the smoke monster? it would explain why she was so evil and how she was able to fill in the well and slaughter an entire village all while the man in black was knocked out.

was it all an elaborate plot to have the man in black stab her, and then have jacob rage out and throw a body into the light, releasing the black smoke?

Not a bad thought. Not sure about the second part of your theory, but it's probably in the ball park. I'm hoping that at some point they'll make the "rules" about Smokey's limitations a little clearer, specifically the part about whose form it can/must assume. Presumably, it became Jacob's brother again after emerging from the tunnel, since he used that form to mention a "loophole" in the S.5 finale and to manipulate Ricardos. Maybe it was Allison Janney before that.

Edit: Though, at the time, I inferred from the tunnel scene that Smokey was "created" by the merging of MiB's "essence" with the light.

Fake Locke told Kate that he had a crazy mother, etc., and told her he used to be a regular person just like her. He seemed to have all the Man in Black's memories. All that leads me to believe that the Smokey we know did not exist before Jacob threw MIB into the light. It IS possible that there could be multiple smoke monsters, in which case Mother might have been a smoke monster too.

I started thinking about that too. UnLocke always dismisses the idea that the island needs a guardian, and he doesn't behave as if he knows any more than he did before MiB's death.

YES. Ben is BACK. I hope my avatar is right, in that he's up to something for the "greater good," but even if he's just snapped, I'm glad that he's doing something.
