i would like to say thanks to my friends for putting up with my every few minutes "what the fuck is happening" exclamations.

so glad lost is back. perfect anecdote escapism for a super long day.

so the scene where you see the island underwater was pretty LOL but for the most part i loved all 2 hours.

Especially the part where they go over top of the shark. Do you think that was the producers nod to "jumping the shark"?



Regarding the alternate timeline: There are some distinct bizzaro world differences like Desmond being on the plane and Hugo thinking he is the luckiest person alive. Not to mention... Jack seems like he remembers everyone.

I like how Hugo lead everyone to the temple. I wonder why Jacob said it was important that Sayid does not die. So many questions. Only 16 hours left of the show.

i'm not sure what to think about the alternate timeline, especially in the context of the juliet via miles, "it worked."

there was the bizarro Hurley, and the fact that Jack saved Charlie, with him proclaiming he was supposed to die.

but then there were also the similarities:
Christian still disappears, Locke and Boone strike up a (albeit short) kinship, U.S. Marshall guy still gets clocked on the head, and jack potentially helping Locke walk again?

overall it was a pretty WTF episode for me.

yeah...i was definitely getting a vibe that jack remembered...also, did boone's comments mean shannon wasn't on the plane?

the two timelines...blowing my mind...

also, boone's comment about how if anything happened he would stick with Locke, which is basically what he did on the island.

strange that we didn't see claire on the plane but she was obviously there since she was in the cab. Also, none of the tailies were shown from what I recall.

The desmond thing was the part that screws with me most, with hugo being all happy a close second.

In the preview it said something about the time for questions is over and my girlfriend said she had more questions than ever and what exactly did that episode actually answer. About all I could come up with was that we now apparently know that esau is the smoke monster.

Jack had actually met Desmond before when they were running at the stadium, and I was surprised they didn't acknowledge that.

I'd wondered the same thing about Boone's* comments, although it just now occurred to me that things wouldn't necessarily (nor should they) be exactly the same if they had succeeded in changing history. Some of the Pre-Season 1 events might've depended upon The Island in some unforeseen way. However, if you think about it, some of the changes should be expected. Hugo's numbers, for example, might not be cursed without their association to the hatch, or for all we know, he would've played different numbers since the man he was supposed to have heard them from in the asylum wouldn't have been obsessed with them. In fact, it seemed that Hugo had gone to Australia for a completely different reason this time.
Along that line of reasoning, I suppose it's entirely possible that Jack and Desmond hadn't met in the stadium in this timeline. Widmore might not have left The Island (would he still have been exiled by Ben?) or survived the explosion, so even if Penny were still conceived, there wouldn't have been a boat race for Desmond to enter and train for. Maybe Jack started to remember Desmond simply because "the rules" for paradox still don't apply to him.

Did John Locke embellish the walkabout to Boone to save face or did they really let him come along this time?

*Speaking of Boone, I LOL'd when Jack actually wanted a pen for an emergency tracheotomy, as he'd let Boone believe in Ep. 1.1 just to get him out of the way.

i forgot to mention another "similarity" in the off-island timeline (maybe because it's the biggest stretch):
Arzt giving Sayid the "terrorist-eye" as if he were going to get blowed-up.

flashbacks, flashforwards and now flash-sideways! loving it.

I'm guessing we'll be seeing two separate timelines through this season. In the first, the explosion at the swan site is "the incident". the swan is constructed, 815 crashes, etc. In the second, the explosion completely annihilates the island and sends it to the bottom of the ocean. Flight 815 flies right over and lands at LAX as planned. Will these two timelines converge somehow? What does that even mean? As long as hurley is around to explain it all to us, i think we'll be ok.

Where do you suppose everyone else who was on the island in 1977 went after the explosion? Are they all dead at the bottom of the ocean or did they get thrown into 2004 X with Jack and Co. or maybe thrown into a 1977 X?

I think they're dead, possibly at the bottom of the ocean. Or they went on living in 1977, if the bomb blast stayed underground and didn't wreck as much havoc as we might think. But either way I'm pretty sure only "our" castaways traveled through time, and only because of the island's special purpose for them.

just read the doc jensen column and was reminded of the theory that the bomb was "the incident" and the alternate history/"sideways" flash was what would've happened if the Swan drilling hadn't been interrupted.

plus he mentioned another parallel of jack fixing the cut on his neck on the plane, and jack sewing up the gash on his side in season 1

That just doesn't follow, imo. There came a point in the last finale where it was clear that Radzinsky would've made sure that the drill kept going until hitting the energy pocket would be unavoidable. What followed would certainly qualify as an "incident." It was something just severe enough to demand a solution, but not so devastating that they couldn't resume construction within a reasonable period of time. I just don't see a hydrogen bomb detonation leading to the DI being inclined or able to construct the hatch on that site.

here's how i see it. they hit the pocket, for sure, in the finale. but as you said not too seriously. But the Losties stopped that whole project. Whether the bomb went off or not, they definitely set back the drilling by a fair amount.

So who's to say that the bomb ever really went off? We definitely don't see it. None of the Losties are burnt to a crisp, not even juliet. And if it did go off, who knows what kind of effect it would have being so close to that pocket of magnetic energy (or whatever).

what we do see, in both scenarios, the island is very much intact. in the underwater cheese scene, the island is still in pretty good shape structurally, the buildings and the earth aren't scorched or disintegrated.

plus if the bomb didn't go off it would further the whole "chernobyl" metaphor they keep using.

plus, plus, if the oceanic flight lands as planned they never get to the island, then get off the island, then time travel back to 1977, and set off jughead, so it would have to be sunk by unimpeded drilling (sorry, i had to go there)

My point was that the drill would have hit the energy pocket with or without the Losties. That common denominator seems much likelier to be euphemized as an "incident." A bomb would've probably caused damage above and beyond the survivors' willingness and ability to construct.
An excellent point. This is where I'm currently at a loss. Did they just exit Quantum-Leap-style as soon as their purpose had been achieved? I honestly don't know what an H-Bomb would do to an entire island, and I only have a very vague concept of how large The Island is and how far The Swan was from the other major landmarks.

I feel like I've heard some basic theory from Science Fiction that paradoxes resolve themselves with divergent timelines and/or alternate realities. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Desmond is bouncing between them somehow, in a way akin to a couple of the episodes from past seasons.

yeah they would've hit the pocket regardless, but what i thought was interesting was the idea that if our heroes wouldn't have been there, the drilling would've been more extensive (more than a minor scratch or "incident") which would've caused the island to sink somehow

But why did Juliet say that she detonated it? Maybe the flash of white fooled her too...

all i know is that if jacob has a temple full of followers, a right hand man that refuses to speak english/speak directly to you, and a fucking lazarus pit* with which to bring sayid back from the dead, that pretty much means jacob is actually ra's al ghul, and following that logic, we MUST assume that esau, the mysterious, shadowy man dressed in black is actually the batman!
