Hope everybody had a fantastic Fourth of July!

We took the weekend off for the holiday but we have so many more bands to spotlight before the Parking Lot Blowout this Saturday!

Next up:

THE AMERICAN JOBS

This band has a truly unique sound - you’d swear you heard a full band in their set, but American Jobs features two percussionists, a saxophone, samples and vocals. Check them out at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Surly Girl Saloon Parking Lot!

Check their music out here:

4 days to go until the 4th Annual Parking Lot Blowout at Surly Girl.

Speaking of surly girls, our fourth band is:

ROSEHIPS!

The Rosehips played the first ever Parking Lot Blowout and we've been enamored with them ever since. This set will be bittersweet though, as it will be one of bassist Jill Harrison's last shows with the band (she's moving out West and we will miss her very much).

Here's a review of their album from The Other Paper:

Quote:
Rocking like the boys, but without the angst

With an all-female lineup, Rosehips is likely to be forever linked to the women-in-rock debate. After 50-odd years of feminine contributions to popular music, one would think it to be a moot point. Women can rock, and prove it on a daily basis.
The real topic to explore is how women rock, upon which Rosehips' self-titled debut album sheds some light.
Women and men think and create differently, which should be expected. Rosehips is simply smart enough to follow its own sonic muse and create music the way it wants, as women with guitars should feel comfortable doing.
The band brings a softer, more emotionally balanced take on the boys' world of angsty indie guitar rock without shedding an iota of volume or power. It sounds like Superchunk's smart younger sister, the one with a cup of tea rattling on top of her amp and spilling over onto a stack of Sassy magazines and post-riot grrl poetry chapbooks.
With the opening track, "Enough," the band cleverly inverts and mellows the chugging intro to Smashing Pumpkins' "Cherub Rock," then follows a course into its own take on post-punk guitar rock, like a sunnier Husker Du.
Even better is the smoldering, heavy "The Dead Are Watching," which sounds like the Raincoats covering early Sondgarden on a mash-note anthem etched onto a Sup Pop Singles Club seven-inch.
The real kicker, and the sort of thing the boys can never pull off, is the sweet, defiant little-girl vocals of Cassie Lewis. Her voice is heartbreakingly delicate yet at the same time packs a surprisingly strong wallop.
In addition, the backing vocals alone tug at the heartstrings enough to keep anyone engaged, a trick performers like the Breeders and Veruca Salt knew a decade or more ago.
The album isn't consistently strong, and much of the best material is front-loaded at the beginning of the disc, but that is to be expected from a band less than 2 years old. The stuff that is good is good enough to keep the group on your radar.
The album is wrapped up wonderfully with a solo-piano-and-vocals reprise of "The Dead Are Watching" that strips all of the haunting beauty of that number down to its core, as exposed as a broken heart on a bloddy sleeve.
Few men could pull off the naked longing of Lewis's vocals on this number, which just goes to show you that some jobs are best left to the fairer sex.

Rick Allen

Hey there. It’s Wednesday and only 3 days until the Parking Lot Blowout on 7/11 at Surly Girl! We’re gonna do 3 band spotlights today to get you through hump day!

This morning’s band is:

WINTER MAKES SAILORS!

Winter Makes Sailors is the solo project of talented musician, Sean Gardner, who you may know from Bookmobile, The Kyle Sowashes, Melty Melty, Kopaz and Denovo. We are very excited that he’ll be doing a special performance with a full band this Saturday at 5:15 p.m.

From Myspace:

Quote:
Employed by the love of collecting vintage instruments and recording gear, Sean Gardner produces home recorded pop songs full of simple, catchy melodies under the moniker Winter Makes Sailors.

He has been playing in the Columbus, Ohio music scene for nearly a decade and in addition to the Winter Makes Sailors project, he shares song-writing duties in Columbus bands Melty Melty and Bookmobile. You’ll also find him helping out on-stage with his friends in The Kyle Sowashes and The Receiver. This could explain why he has been slow to finish an album.

Look for his first record to be released in November, 2009 or thereabouts.

6 Parking Lot Blowout Bands! We're halfway through!

We've been hopping around our line up and taking the stage at 9 p.m.:

THE GUINEA WORMS!

Here's a review from http://www.theonetruedeadangel.blogspot.com for their latest 7-inch put out by CDR:
Quote:
They've been around for ten years, playing the Columbus live circuit, but have released practically nothing (just five tracks on vinyl) -- odd, but it happens. Which is too bad, because this is a pretty swell single, and if it's any indication, the band is probably sitting on a pile of unreleased gems. This is an eccentric and somewhat whacked-out take on punk, weird but catchy, with a lo-fi garage sound that suits them perfectly. "Box of Records" is a buzzing, punked-out slice of guitar sizzle that sounds equally influenced by new wave (especially the Knack) as by punk, a catchy piece of work dedicated to everyone's favorite subject, the joys of vinyl. The song on the flipside is a bit stranger, but no less catchy thanks to the trebly stop 'n start guitar and the insistent repetition of the title, which serves as the song's repeated chorus; just for fun, they throw in whacked-out solo action on some peculiar (or at least peculiar-sounding) instruments. Strange but fun.

Team CMC has all the volunteer goodie bags ready, the mugs are packed up and almost all the details are finalized for our 4th Parking Lot Blowout.

One more band spotlight tonight before we get our beauty sleep!

CHEATER SLICKS!

The Cheater Slicks formed in Boston in the late 80’s and relocated to Columbus in the mid-90’s and we sure are glad they did. The Slicks have been turning out garage-punk tunes for years and we’re super excited they’ll be joining us for Here Comes Your Weekend. They hit the stage Saturday at 9:45 p.m.

You can hear their music here:

The Parking Lot Blowout is TOMORROW!

Our 10th band spotlight is:

MOVIOLA

Moviola doesn’t play very often in Columbus and we are honored to have them play our stage at 8:15 on Saturday. They’ll also be playing a special set with 8-band members for one night only!

SF Weekly had this to say about Moviola:

Quote:
…It’s the ability to be quirky, individualist and knowing, include ironic asides, and at the same time communicate real feeling, or to empathize so strongly with another, that you’re actually there with them. That’s the quality that Moviola have. They avoid the alt-country and even Americana ghetto altogether, their range is too wide.

Check their music out here:

Alright. Last but certainly not least, we are pleased to spotlight:

STRUCK BY LIGHTNING!

We have ended most of our parking lot parties with metal bands and this year is no exception. The new project from Mouth of the Architect’s Greg Lahm, Struck By Lightning will close this year’s Here Comes Your Weekend Parking Lot Blowout at 10:30 p.m. Do not miss it!

Well, we’re almost done planning this year’s Here Comes Your Weekend Parking Lot Blowout, so we wanted to take a quick minute to remind you about the great program you’re helping fund by attending tomorrow’s event!

Proceeds from the bar and food tent benefit the Columbus Musicians’ Assistance Program (CMAP). CMAP is the signature project of the CMC and we donated $7,500 to Columbus musicians in our pilot year.

CMAP awards grants to Central Ohio musicians who are lacking health insurance coverage and who are experiencing health-related financial hardships.

Musicians can submit requests for assistance with:

* Medical bills/treatments/office visits
* Vision or dental services
* Prescription medications
* Drug and alcohol addiction treatment

For more information about CMAP or any CMC project or programming, please contact us at columbusmusiccoop@gmail.com or 614.266.5157.

Now! Get your behind down to the Surly Girl Saloon, tomorrow, July 11, 2009 from 2 p.m.-midnight. It’s free, all-ages and we have 11 bands and cocktails and hot dogs all for a good cause!

SEE YOU TOMORROW!

This just in: The St. James Tavern is conveniently located within walking distance of Surly Girl...once our music ends, anybody who has a wristband from the Blowout can get $1.50 domestic bottles at the St. James. Yay!
