Tpain+Kid Cudi=Kanye's New Steez.
but at least Kanye realize modern r+b is where its at.
i just hope that Kid Cudi's career isnt stunted by Kanye coopting him.

shits good though.

Shitty songs with autotuned vocals and emulated TR-808 sequenced drums are what I can't stand.

the autotune does annoy me at points. on the other hand, there are some songs i really like. plus, i give him credit for trying something not in his safe zone.

I see it as a safer zone.

The songs aren't shitty and the auto tune can be distracting at first but it's easy to sort of let it blend in.

This will probably make some people loopy, but in a lot of ways Kanye doing this album is similar to Springsteen's release of NEBRASKA. Both artists were in a depressed state and their records were released as lo-fi efforts (of their respective genres).

80s and Heartbreaks isn't meant to make new fans, I dont think.. It's Kanye working through the death of his mother and the ending of a serious relationship with his girlfriend. It's weird and sad and strange and I think a pretty bold move for an artist who is on the top of his genre to release this strange little curiousity of a record.

I guess I just don't care about Kanye. He's no Pharrell Williams.

Awful. The autotune all over everything is obnoxious. Greg Dulli and Neil Young can't "sing," but their soul and ability to emote outweights their shortcomings. If Kanye had guts, he would have just sang it and let his deficiencies as a singer become a part of the experience.

Or maybe Dulli should have used an autotune on "Gentlemen."

I see it as a style choice ... Not trying to mask his singing...

I think a better comparison is more like... Pollard could go hi fi recording but chooses not for the feel of the album.

Hey, you're right about one thing: Neil Young and Gred Dulli definitely can't sing.

But I think that's the only thing. I'm not a fan of Kanye, but this is his best album. The autotune is only annoying if you're inclined to think less-processed recordings are in some way more emotive than recordings that are obviously processed. Why can't someone's soul/emotions/whatever be just as effectively communicated by a meticulous final product using all the tools available?

after one listen:

yeah, I agree. I thought it was used more like an effect than an attempt to fix or mask it. I didn't get the impression he was trying to pass it off as normal singing that had been corrected. I kinda felt like he wanted to make it sound robot-y.

Listen to the verse parts where the autotune doesn't kick in.

well, the live thing was kinda akward, and maybe it is a crutch, but I'm still thinkin' it was a style choice. And, it reminds me of this:

I will admit that Love Lockdown is growing on me. It's a decent song lyrically and musically, but it's pretty obvious that the autotune, even as an effect, was most certainly used because of the fact that he can't sing very well.

The fact that he even acknowledged them is as funny to me as you mentioning Ween in your own thread about Kanye. I suppose now I should mention that Ween used the autotune on a single track from the last record and intentionally sang bad to make it go crazy. It was a style choice.

Did Kanye mention anything about wanting his new record to sound like Cher, T-Pain, or Lil' Wayne?
