So far, the responses from Houston Calling's first column have been pretty good. After Duffy sent out the press release I received an email from someone at the Houston Press asking if I would be interested in writing about upcoming shows. I said sure, so we'll see how that goes.

Also, I sent out a ton of email to various Houston bands asking if they'd be interested in answering 10 questions each for upcoming posts. Most have agreed and I plan to post these from time to time. The first one, with bassist Rozz Zamorano, will be up this week.

Thanks for the support. It's much appreciated.

Later,

David

What? Duffy sent out a press release to Houston outlets to let them know about the column? Hmm ... I never got any calls from The Other Paper or the Dispatch here in Columbus after Atomic Ned made it's debut. Hmm ... where was MY press release? (just kidding Duffy).

To be honest, the only thing I did was send out the dw.newsletter and announce it on the site.

I *WAS* going to send something to the Houston Press and some other places, but I've been kinda sick lately and out of my mind, so I haven't done it yet.

How Houston Press found Houston Calling within 24 hours of launch is a mystery to me.

But it's great news, either way.

Hey, David, where did the "Otter" nickname come from?

Sad to say, it's not an exciting story.

You've all seen the movie Animal House, I'm sure. Well, when I was a freshman in college a friend (actually, Mike who is now in Caviar) and I were out with some frat guys letting them buy us beer and they said we need nicknames. (Sometimes art does imitate life, huh?)

Anyway, they named him something like "Cotangent" because he said he was a math or physics major--something like that. They named me "Otter." My name stuck. I used to get people giving me little otter postcards and ceramic trinkets. Even my mom gave me a stuffed toy otter, which resides under a dust coat on top of my computer monitor at home. 10+ years later I still have people who introduce me as that, which drives me nuts.

I am sure the whole otterco thing doesn't help that but oh well.

And I thought for sure the Press saw a press release. Very very odd. Cool though. I will definitely keep you posted on anythign that happens with that.
