So Dave what exactly is the difference between defacing property and burning couches and flipping cars??

i can't speak for dave but my assumption
is that he means the methods you are taking of problem solving..

not the actual act of graffiti.

I didn't say there was. I never said I thought tagging or burning shit or whatever was right. Really my point with the above comment was just made by other people's responses. If someone's not on your side, they must be on their side.

No, you're a vandal.

Here's a quick primer differnentiating vandalism from art.

If you utilize a medium that you purchased, it is art.
If you utilize a medium that someone else owns and you don't have permission to use, it is vandalism.

If you invite the press and public to view your masterpiece, it is art.
If you sneak around at night because you'll get busted by the cops if you get caught, it is vandalism.

If your works are sold or displayed in galleries, it is art.
If your works are taken down by the rightful owners of the property, it is vandalism.

If the location where your work is makes money from your work, it is art.
If the location where your work is has to pay money out of their own pocket to repair the damage you caused, it is vandalism.

If you are overjoyed to see your picture in the paper following a showing, it is art.
If you wear a bandanna to hide your face if anyone is taking a picture, it is vandalism.

If this pocket guide is not helpful enough, here's a suggestion: The next time you decide you want to bomb some private property, call the owner, the press, and (most important) the police. Tell them the exact date, time, and location that you are going to produce your "art." Although wine and crackers will probably not be on the menu for your "gallery opening," I remain confident that you will attract a large crowd of well dressed individuals who will have all kinds of interesting comments on your artistic bent.

Best of luck.

this is ironic. If anything, i was thinking the same of you guys - you know; blame the victim, avoid personal responsibility by bad rationalization, assume that small business owners somehow benefit from your actions...

oh wait - you were just trying to be more evolved. my bad.

he was a philly vandal, and a magazine publisher that went to new york businesses and claimed he worked for the cities new organization to clean up graffiti.

Then after lieing to them, would paint his name on their buildings.

P.S. I also find it hysterical that his copyright notice on the bottom of his site uses the term "Art Crimes."

I'm gonna go with Column B, Johnny. What'd I win?

I'm curious. Since age is so crucial to understanding the current culture, how old are you? What is the official cut-off age when people cease to be able to understand how great kids are and resort to saying "stupid shit?"

I congratulate you on successfully "proving" that the restaurant was tagged between owners. Now, how would you justify the other acts being mentioned? Are you going to encourage the "protection racket" scheme that mikecarney was describing?

ironically, I like the idea of guerrilla art, but doing it to small business and doing it so badly doesn't exactly accomplish anything does it? Seriously?

Do you feel your art presented any kind of message, even if it was just ars gratia artis ("art for art's sake")? I see it as a waste of talent. Go paint something that needs painting if you really need to paint. Get the kids involved with wanting to make their neighborhood something to be proud of. fuck. I live in a much "worse" neighborhood in Cinci, and when I came to Columbus last weekend, the first thing I noticed is what a trashed shit-hole it is because no one gives a fuck about where they live (or more accurately, where their neighbors live). Then people wonder why they get no respect or why some fuckhead developer can buy out their whole neighborhood for pennies on the dollar forcing everyone to fucking move.

OK, I missed the point, too.

You said something provocative. You provoked someone. And then you act all surprised when someone made the obvious inference. So, what was your original point?

I think your knowledge of the art world is quite limited.

The point was that you people just assume that just because I make a comment making fun of the 'anti' crowd I must be a member of the 'pro' crowd. I thought it was pretty clear after my response to miss rabbit, but I guess not.

#1 the title is gallery graffiti. by definition it takes place in a ??? not on someone else's property.

#2 rich white people will call everything art at some point in the next 10 years.

#3 nike is just following a ...are you ready....trend...that will be replaced by another in another week

pardon the numbering, but i'm trying to follow a keep it simple aesthetic

btw sorry to bring that pesky aesthetic concept into this discussion
