In Times Square, Central Park, and on the beach.

Lighting up in Times Square, Central Park and on the beach at Coney Island will become illegal under a new smoking ban announced Wednesday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"The science is clear: prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke - whether you're indoors or out - hurts your health. Today, we're doing something about it," Bloomberg said.

The bill must pass in the City Council, where Bloomberg has strong support.

"When this legislation is passed, all New Yorkers will be able to enjoy a walk in the park or a day at the beach without having to inhale secondhand smoke," council speaker Christine Quinn said.

"This bill will save lives and make New York City a healthier place to live," she added.

New York City has 14 miles (some 22 kilometers) of beaches and more than 1,700 parks, like the famous Central Park, and playgrounds.

Bloomberg, a passionate anti-smoking former smoker, braved heated opposition in 2003 to push through a ban on smoking in bars and restaurants.

The new ban would seek to eradicate smoking in popular tourist spots including pedestrian plazas such as Times Square where another Bloomberg initiative banned cars.

Violators would face fines of up to 250 dollars.

Smokers in the city, who already have to pay between 11 and 15 dollars for a packet of cigarettes, fumed.

I so infrequently see smokers in Times Square (where my job is unfortunately located), that I don't think this is that big of an issue. Let's maybe focus our energy on keeping the subway/bus fares under control, or maybe on education?

$19 billion is a lot of cig taxes..

I agree with you, Cgirl, that it's not such a big deal.

I don't think it's a big deal BUT this is pretty stupid.

First of all, you're not only outside, but in a city not known for it's air quality so is second hand smoke really that much of an issue? I don't know if smokers are as much of a problem as the constant traffic but whatevs.

Secondly, and more importantly, smoking a cig is sometimes a good cover in the park for smoking something else. Again, oh well.

I have to agree. Worry about the thousands of cars that drive by every single day, or the new carpet in the office. Not the 20 people who might be smoking in Central Park. Political smokescreen....

I smoke. I am conscious and considerate of others. If I'm on the beach I use an empty beercan for my butts. In the park, my pocket or a trashcan. On the street, a trashcan, or if I'm in the city, I sometimes give those loudass street-sweepers that come by twice a week something to sweep up.

If some prick or mom or effing green-suited whistleblowing park/beach patrol people start coming up to me giving me shit, I might lose it. I've practically paid for their little Billy and all his classmate's computers at school. They should be thanking me for smoking.

If the govt wants to man up and make smoking illegal, that's one thing. But this is about as far as I want it to get. If my father and I can't sit in the park and play chess and smoke a cigar without getting shit from anti-smoking nazis, well, you can smoke my dick. If I can't come out of the ocean and dry off my hands and light up.. If I can't step outside the bar to enjoy a conversation and a cigarette, well, what the eff next?

I don't want "Designated Smoking Areas" in the park or on the beach or on the sidewalk. That's stupid.
