...The Kochs are longtime libertarians who believe in drastically lower personal and corporate taxes, minimal social services for the needy, and much less oversight of industry—especially environmental regulation. These views dovetail with the brothers’ corporate interests. In a study released this spring, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst’s Political Economy Research Institute named Koch Industries one of the top ten air polluters in the United States. And Greenpeace issued a report identifying the company as a “kingpin of climate science denial.” The report showed that, from 2005 to 2008, the Kochs vastly outdid ExxonMobil in giving money to organizations fighting legislation related to climate change, underwriting a huge network of foundations, think tanks, and political front groups. Indeed, the brothers have funded opposition campaigns against so many Obama Administration policies—from health-care reform to the economic-stimulus program—that, in political circles, their ideological network is known as the Kochtopus.

In a statement, Koch Industries said that the Greenpeace report “distorts the environmental record of our companies.” And David Koch, in a recent, admiring article about him in New York, protested that the “radical press” had turned his family into “whipping boys,” and had exaggerated its influence on American politics. But Charles Lewis, the founder of the Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan watchdog group, said, “The Kochs are on a whole different level. There’s no one else who has spent this much money. The sheer dimension of it is what sets them apart. They have a pattern of lawbreaking, political manipulation, and obfuscation. I’ve been in Washington since Watergate, and I’ve never seen anything like it. They are the Standard Oil of our times.”

so I read today that Koch Industries - the money behind the anti-Healthcare Reform Townscreamingmatches, the Tea Party, anti-Environmental movement, etc. (along with several Republican States) has applied for Federal money from the Healthcare Reform thing.

I don't know which is less surprising: that the people who spent millions combating HCR/"Obamacare" through astroturf campaigns using an army of useful idiots along with Jindal and several other anti-HRC Republican Governors are asking for a slice of the pie, or that the people who did their dirty work and will vote Republican this fall won't give a shit about being hypocrites. Call me cynical but the TP seems more interested in hype than facts, and despite their little Honor and Integrity circle jerk the other day, won't find the necessary amounts of either to actually be consistent.

and now a surprised cat:

According to Mayer, the Kochs have spent “more than a hundred million dollars” on “right-wing” foundations since 1980. Let’s be aggressive, and assume arguendo the figure, adjusted for inflation, is four hundred million dollars. That’s a whole $13 million or so a year since 1980. By contrast, the Ford Foundation, one of many well-endowed “mainstream” liberal foundations, spends over $500 million a year, a decent fraction of which goes to left-wing organizations and causes.

Meanwhile, David Koch, one of the brothers in question, has recently given one hundred million dollars to Lincoln Center, 2.5 million dollars to New York City ballet, more than forty million dollars to Sloan Kettering, fifteen million dollars to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, a hundred and twenty-five million to M.I.T. for cancer research, twenty million to Johns Hopkins University, and twenty-five million to the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston.

"But liberals shouldn't seethe about the Kochs without at least acknowledging that all ideas are seeded by patrons, on the left as well as the right. This will always be true."

"In fact, my own perspective on this issue was forever underscored in June of 2004, when I watched George Soros address a thousand giddy Washington liberals, all of whom had gathered in a hotel ballroom under the auspices of a group called Campaign for America's Future (a recipient of Soros money). They loved it when he boasted, "I've put my money where my mouth is." And they nodded approvingly when Senator Hillary Clinton stood and declared: "He's using his resources to make sure that his opinions are heard in the marketplace, and that is in the great American tradition!" - Dick Polman, WHYY

But see, at least Soros is honest about it, instead of funding astroturf.
