If I had an iphone from the future I wouldn't lose it no matter how drunk I got. punked.
I actually like the new design a lot and it looks like it might be more durable. (though I dropped my 3gs in the parking lot of the red door tavern and the screen survived) Not sure why you would need 80 gigs of memory with so many streaming apps out there (though simplify media is temp. shut down, fuckers). Finally, someone was smart enough to put a cam on the front for skype

article says that actual dropped calls indicate it's more than just a software issue, but who knows. either way- as with several other apple releases, early adopters get dicked.

EXACTLY. I think I'll leave the engineering up to the engineers, and not some dude who made a youtube video and some dude who emailed Gizmodo.

this seems to be an actual issue, though the scope and cause are unidentified at the moment.

But, in my tests, network reception was a mixed bag. Compared with the previous model, the new iPhone dropped marginally fewer calls made in my car, both in Washington and in Boston, and was much louder and clearer over my car’s built-in Bluetooth speaker-phone system.

Yet, in some places where the signal was relatively weak, the iPhone 4 showed no bars, or fewer bars than its predecessor. Apple says that this is a bug it plans to fix, and that it has to do with the way the bars are presented, not the actual ability to make a call. And, in fact, in nearly all of these cases, the iPhone 4 was able to place calls despite the lack of bars.

This seems to ID the issue as an issue with the OS update.

I'm curious what makes you think this. Examples?

There is so much FUD/Bullshit-linkbait trolling that I'd immediately question the authenticity of any supposed "reported issue". I can see the Gizmodo headline now: "SOME GUY JUST EMAILED US TO REPORT THAT THE IPHONE 4 WILL RAPE YOUR GRANDMOTHER"

For example, this piece of complete bullshitery from Scott Moritz.

oh i'm sure as you mention there's rumors abound, but my statement was based on the article that I originally posted:
Quote:
- in fact, we've already managed to slowly kill two calls that way so it's not just an issue with the software erroneously reporting an incorrect signal strength.

That, and the fact that putting a rubber sleeve on it (insulating the antennae from the skin) seems to resolve the issue, makes me think there's some physics at play here besides just a software bug.

also (anecdotal), from my friend's FB update: " irst phone call on iphone4!...... Dropped call.."

I could be wrong. but I'm not going read a zillion articles on it, because as you say, there's a bunch of speculation right now and the truth will come out soon enough.

but if it is a software bug, that seems like some shit that shoulda been worked out pre-release, hence my 'dicked' comment.

EDIT: I think either I mis-read your original reply or there was some quoting changes that altered the meaning of your reply. Now my response makes less sense. almost zero sense in fact. hold on....

Mr. Jobs:
Quote:
"Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your Phone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

From my personal observation:
_there does seem to be a bit more signal fluctuation (by the display bars, if those are indeed accurate) It seems to be a bit more sensitive to movement.

_if I'm understanding the issue correctly, it seems like you have to essentially "palm" the corner of the phone in order to bridge the two antennas. A somewhat normal posture when using it. It would also be quite easy to adjust/adapt this posture if this is an issue and still be in a completely natural "phone using position"

One interesting comment I heard was that this could have been overlooked during testing because the phones were in cases to disguise them.

Also note that nobody EVER makes this much of a deal over a possible design issue or flaw in any Android phone. :wall:

Just about every cell phone in current production has the antenna located at the bottom. This insures that the radiating portion of the antenna is furthest from the head. Apple was not the first to locate the antenna on the bottom, and certainly won't be the last. The problem is that humans have their hands below their ears, so the most natural position for the hand is covering the antenna. This can't be a good design decision, can it? How can we be stuck with this conundrum? It's the FCC's fault.

Even Brian Lam, Gizmodo’s editorial director, saw an upside to the iPhone 4, antenna problems and all. “We are paying attention to the antenna issue because it could be a big deal,” he said.

But Mr. Lam said that for years, he had not been able to use older iPhones to make calls from his home. That changed on Thursday, after he bought an iPhone 4. “I have made three hours of calls today,” he said.

I've got a 3GS, and it worked like a charm. Took forever for the download, but once I got it, I had no problem upgrading. It's a nice bump for the software...every so often I can see the results of the multitasking.

I had no problems downloading+updating a 3G. Noticeable performance improvement, though some people have complained otherwise. Folders are awesome-went from 6 app screens to like 1.5.

I think it's only like 300-400MB, shouldn't take that long to download.

My 3G is slower in a lot of respects since upgrading. Takes longer to get to SMS, settings, etc.

I have only 1 gig free of 8 gigs, I read that it *COULD* be related.

What if Verizon got an iPhone
http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/06/30/ ... an-iphone/

Couple in-depth articles about the antenna thing. Sounds like it's a few issues converging, some of which can be remedied via update, some in hardware design, and some with ATT.
