man this whole show just metachloreaned for me.
i'll be watching sunday, but fuck. i admired the way they dealt with time-travel paradoxes, but for the whole point of the show is a gigantic logical fallacy...fuck.

now i know they've been through some weird shit, but if somebody gave that reasoning as to why everybody i've known in the past 5 years is dead... i would've told uncle roman to blow it out his ass.

kinda...

i was just really hoping that the whole candidate thing was more flocke trickery because it really makes no sense.

person A wants to kill person B
person B knows that person A wants to kill him
person A cannot kill person B unless person B brings person C to the island
person B knows that person A cannot kill him
person B brings persons C, D, E... to the island to replace him because he knows that person A wants to kill him

DOES NOT COMPUTE

i was trying to give a simplified version, because i've heard lots of "ifs" and "buts" but none of them over-ride that main flaw in logic.

jacob, et al, obviously thinks the job of protecting the island is VERY important... perhaps the most important job in the world. If you are charged with the most important job in the world, you don't just get off with "being tired of it." sorry, not acceptable in my book. dude is a godlike figure and nobody would be pleased or accept god to be like it, "fuck it, you're all going to hell this shit is boring and i'm tired... unless maybe one of you wants to do this for me... OH you just have to complete this thing that I can't do and i've got mad superpowers. L8ers. p.s. i just made you 'just like me' so logically, you won't be able to complete the aforemention thing either."

from what we've learned of the island's past, people have always either stumbled onto the island or been brought to it. Mother says, "i brought it here, how else would it get here," i think she also claimed to have brought the ship that carried real-mom to the island. what i'm getting at is that people have been on the island before and they either killed themselves off or got close enough to "the light" that they had to be dealt with by the protector of the light. this leads to: if random people come to the island and Flocke can manipulate them into killing you, hence putting the fate of the island in danger, then as the protector of the island, one should kill these random people before they kill you.

and i don't buy that, it's not the Jacob way or anything like that. if the island and the light are so important, then you gotta do what you gotta do otherwise it's not that important.

these are my issues, and i understand if they're not that important to anyone else, but i'm really unhappy with "the candidates" and "the light," and the way the show has turned. you can't please everyone as i'm sure carlton and damon are well aware.

more fun with logic!

everyone you know from the island died because i wanted to give you a choice.

if you choose A, everyone else you know will die and you will too

if you choose B, maybe not.

thanks for the killer choice.

another thing: if he felt so guilty about what he did to his brother, why didn't he try to patch up the relationship instead of bringing people to the island to fix his problem. he only had a few thousand years or so.

"look bro, my bad. you're immortal, i'm immortal and neither of us can leave the island.... BUT i just made some jet-skis wash ashore. what do you say we go Miami Vice on this bitch? i get to be crockett."

obviously i'm (kinda) joking

I think the big difference between God and Jacob as far as "I'm tired of this job" is that God created the world. It was his choice to make it and oversee it. Jacob did not create the light. And he didn't really have a choice in taking the job. While he might think it's the most important job in the world, I think he can still be tired of it.

Bennett, the main thing I think you're overlooking is 'the rules'. You can try to apply logic to it, but at the end of the day, there are rules that have been created and need to follow. If we were playing Monopoly and I got to set the rules, I could make it so that everytime you passed go, you had to give me $200. You would say that doesn't make any logical sense, but I could say, "Hey, my game, my rules. When we play your game, you can set up the rules."

----

On another note, Doc Jensen over at EW.com says he thinks the island needs the light but the light doesn't need the island. He believes Desmond's going to descend into the cave and bring the light out and distribute it to whatever losties are left and then they'll all be equal protectors of the light and keep it inside them. Then the island, no longer having a purpose will sink.

Oh, and Desmond will lead Smokey back into the cave and once he's back, he would be stuck again until another human got thrown in. But in this case, there won't be another human unless somebody goes scuba diving.

i don't think that i'm overlooking the rules, it's more that i think the rules themselves don't agree with themselves and that the characters have behaved in ways that seem illogical when taken in context of the rules.

i mean, i get that there are things beyond the realm of understanding (one of the main themes of the show is the conflict between science and faith) but somewhere along the line certain things just went too far for me... the most glaring of which for me is the whole candidates thing.

and despite jacob's claim otherwise, he had about as much choice as any of the castaways. Mother said, "you don't really have a choice." he still could have splashed the cup back in her face (or simply said, "yes i do" and not agreed). telling the castaways that one of them either has to protect the island or everything they know will cease to be and everything they've known will be for nothing is basically saying "you don't really have a choice."

Jack didn't drink from the bottle of wine. He drank water from the stream..
Just sayin..I'm not convinced that Jack is the protector yet..

i also wanted to clarify that i wasn't trying to make a direct comparison between jacob and god so much as i was trying to illustrate how being so nonchalant when the fate of the world is in the balance is kind of a dick move. yeah immortality's a bitch, but saying "maybe you guys'll pull this off, maybe not...ashes are gone, peace!" just isn't right. even crazy mom had a protector pro-tempore in place before she died.

which brings me back to richard. why isn't he the new protector again? seems like a good dude. doesn't want to die. plus, like i said on page 13, he did drink the wine...

another thing:
flocke says ben can have the island if ben kills some people. then he tells ben that he's going to destroy the island.

huh?

does this mean flocke knows ben is trying to play him, or is it just a fuck up? or am i just wrong here?

so, saying that jacob needs to bring somebody to the island is, like abstraction said, assuming that people can't get to the island without jacob's help. which i realize isn't necessarily true, but is part of a larger question of why he let people survive on the island at all.

as far as the destroying the island goes... i understand why flocke would change his mind, but why would he say it to ben? i mean, you think he would still need some motivation to kill folks. it's understandable why he would kill widmore, and i could understand if he wanted to kill desmond for kicking his ass across multiple universes, but you'd think he might want to keep that little bit of info to himself... despite his claims of always telling the truth, we've seen flocke lie at least once that we know of for sure, by telling claire that the others had her baby. and it's not like he'd even be lying, he could have just not said that he was going to destroy the island. just seems like sloppy writing for the sake of a cliffhanger (and like i mentioned before the black dress was already enough of that).

corggirl, seems like we just have substantially different views on certain things. i most definitely did not think that MIB's village was wiped out by other people on the island. While we haven't seen Jacob actually killing any of the others or castaways, we have seen plenty instances where it was referred to as the island being done (or not done) with somebody, and the inevitability of that (charlie). maybe that's jacob's way... maybe that's smokey masquerading as "the island," (certainly it would seem so in michael's case, when christian appears and says, "you can go now" or whatever)... i don't know. Aside from MIB's village (which i view as evidence and you do not), there isn't much evidence of the island's "protector" being capable of doing much of anything but working a loom and baptizing a famished, escaped slave. Apparently this is where I am willing to assume certain things, because while there are certainly ways of protecting something without resorting to violence, a "Protector" without the ability to at least do so in last resort seems mildly useless.

in regards to BSuperstar's comments... again, just fundamentally does not make sense to me. Ben has shown at times a certain weaselly perseverance, but it just seems like a stretch for him to agree to kill the people that gave him a second chance in what was one of his darkest moments. Ben has no family, no friends (if he kills those still alive) no power without the island... and he just killed widmore... possibly the only other thing keeping him motivated. For smokey to believe that Ben would lick his bootheels out of fear of death alone doesn't make sense. We're talking about a guy that just pulled of a hundred-plus-year plan to kill one person. I'm thinking he learned looooooong ago that fear can only do so much to motivate a man, especially one so similar to himself in ben.

i'm kinda surprised that i'm the only one that has a problem with any of this shit.
