FBI agents visited the offices of the conservative Weekly Standard magazine yesterday after a shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum and told employees they'd found the magazine's address A senior Standard staffer confirmed the visit but declined to discuss it in detail. An FBI spokeswoman, Katherine Schweit , also declined to comment on the investigation. Two other sources said two FBI agents arrived shortly after 5:00 p.m. Thursday at the 17th Street offices of the magazine. They told staffers that they had found the address of the magazine on a piece of paper associated with the shooter, James von Brunn, and asked whether the Standard had received any threats. The magazine is about a mile north of the Holocaust Museum, and there's no other indication that von Brunn had targeted it. Von Brunn's published rants included attacks on "neocons," and the Standard has been at the heart of the neoconservative movement. The suggestion that the Standard may have been a target complicates any view of the racist shooter in contemporary left-right terms. Von Brunn's white supremacist roots put him under the rubric of a "right-wing extremist," but the substance of his views -- which included everything from believing that President Bush may have been in on the September 11 attacks to denying that President Obama is an American citizen -- are too far on the fringe to fit into conventional political classification. The focus on the Standard, though, appears to be of a piece with his central motivation: Anti-Semitism. In one essay, Von Brunn attacked "JEWS-NEOCONS-BILL O’REILLY," and the suggestion that neoconservatism is a specifically Jewish conspiracy is common on the racist fringe. |

I worded it poorly. Sorry. But this my team vs. your team attitude (it's not just you, or never you depending on your opinion) when stuff like this happens is a little disturbing to me. This guy seems to be all over the board in his beliefs (i.e. crazy). So anyway...is it me or is it hard to imagine an 88yr old bigot/murderer? Hollywood told me that they are all young, poor, and tatooed heavily. |

No, I get that, and your point. As for the 'lone nut' thing, I'll have to disagree in the case of Tiller's murderer and the holocaust museum dude. In the first case, he had contact with various anti-choice groups (and entertainment/"news" channels) who rather instantly cheered this crime, and who likely gave him resources if not motivation. The other guy has some rather large networks as well, and despite my sarcastic remark earlier about the good nazis, I can't imagine that any of them exactly wept over this dude's victims or his actions. In other words, are these all really individual, lone nut crimes or is there a larger pattern? Even several of the domestic violence and cop-shooting crimes lately have been done by people who espoused fear that Obama was going to take away their guns and similar hogwash which just happens to be thrown in their faces daily. And no, the left is not without its own set of crazy people who believe all kinds of stupid and illogical stuff, they just tend to get baked and stink up coffee houses and Phish shows more than go on a shooting rampage. |
