I don't usually have trouble thinking of gift ideas for her, but this year I've got buyer's block. What are you all getting for your moms for Xmas?

Does your mom like birds (like most moms)?

My mom has a rag-tag collection of (mostly awful) bird figurines.

I'm bringing her into the 21st century (and a higher level of aesthetic) with the birds offered by Design Within Reach. They twitch and move and respond to changes in light. They use birdsongs recorded by Cornell's lab of ornithology. They are creepy as hell, and I love 'em.

http://dwr.com/productdetail.cfm?id=6779
Quote:
You don't have to be an ornithologist to appreciate the ungimmicky bird songs and movements of the motion-activated Singing Birds. Based on hand-sculpted models by Dr. Tsutomu Suzuki of the University of Tokyo, these freestanding birds are made even more realistic with modern microchip technology, which produces true-to-life sound and twitching in response to motion and changes in light conditions. The birds’ authentic songs come from real recordings from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, whose mission is to conserve the earth’s biodiversity through research, education and science-based focus on birds. Take your pick of a Northern Cardinal, an Eastern Bluebird, an American Goldfinch, an American Robin a Kingfisher or a Great Tit, and present them as unique gifts. Or, place a few Singing Birds throughout a space to bring levity to family gatherings, the workspace or to make the mood more festive. Parakeets can stand on included perch or alone. On-off switch. Requires 3-LR44 batteries (included). Notes: Dimensions are approximate and vary between bird species. A stand is included inside of each box.

Awesome. You can actually get your mom a set of Great Tits, without the awkwardness formerly associated with such a gift!

Every year I agonize over what to get my mother. Ugghhh.... she's not a clothes horse (like me). She has everything a person could ever want to own with the exception of an Xbox I guess. This year she's getting Target and TJ Maxx gift cards with a few little things thrown in.

Note to self: never, ever volunteer to bring any mention of your mother on to this board.

i just threw up a little bit.

my job here is done then.

Sorry. it's my nature. I am a bad kid - I'm likely to get Krampus showing up at my door to beat the crap out of me on Christmas instead of Santa. I should be so lucky...

This year I got my mom:

Bath and Body Works stuff
The History of OSU Football DVD
a keychain with a bichon frise (dog) on it
A fleece OSU jacket

and....

a rubber snake.

She requested the rubber snake. It's to put in the carport where the birds have built nests to scare them away. Apparently they're pooping on her car.

So I guess my mom doesn't like birds either.

Hey...I just wanna say birds aren't just for moms. i know at least 2 people other than myself that are not moms and love birding. ha. two. i don't have bird collectibles or figurines but I do own some field guide birding books, some binoculars and love a nature walk. it's true unfortunately but probably not a surprise. :)

some things i've done in the past for my mom:

-Martha Stewart Living magazine subscription
-Real Simple magazine subscription
-Ina Garten, Barefoot Contessa cookbooks
-small tv/cd player combo for the kitchen
-a "how to: ebay" book for her (she's an antique dealer)
-my mom is a gardener AND loves birds, so I got her a book about picking plants for her garden that attract certain types of birds
-gift certificate to the Wild Birds Unlimited store (feeders and seed, etc)
-any kind of lotions and candles, my mom also works at a garden/landscaping nursery so she's getting some super intensive care hand balms from Aveda this year
-my dad is getting my mom an automatic car starter installed this year for her truck!! now that's awesome!!

Gross! You should give her something she'll really like, like a pearl necklace.

pffft. no way. i don't like figurines of any kind. i think i have an aversion b/c one grandma collected those precious moments figurines and the other collected Lalique crystal. as a kid, i had to tip-toe through whatever room their curio cabinets of stupid breakable collectibles were in which was no fun. i still moan if i see precious moments figurines and it immediately gives me a sense of panic that i'm going to break something.

it's amazing what some people will collect.

i have enough of a collector's obsession in records, cds and music gear to make up for 1,000 bird figurines.
