As Rob Dizzle's sister, I thought I'd show my love by posting on this message board.

I am currently reading Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl. It's kind of a chick read, but I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to know the ins and outs of prostitution.

Okay, Rob, keep it real.

We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda by Philip Gourevitch :
If I stayed more on top of things I would have read this 5 years ago. It's a compelling account of the 1994 Rwandan genocide (erroneously referred to as a "civil war") where 800,000 Tutsi (ethnic minorities) were put to death. I'm a painfully slow reader but I imagine I'll get through this one relatively quckly.

Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert (tran Frances Steegmuller):
I was a little frightened of this. All the reviews I had read made a big point about Flaubert's obsessive emphasis on technicality (generally not my bag), but so far I have been pleasantly surprised. This translation reads well and is certainly not as dry as I expected.

The TROUSER PRESS GUIDE TO 90S ROCK by Ira Robbins :
I'm slowly working my way through this (just finished Dead C, next up... Dead Can Dance). It's great, but the title is slightly overreaching as it only covers up to about 1996. The entire text is available. I think they are adding new entries online all the time.

Northern Light: One Couples Epic Voyage from the Arctic to the Antarctic by Rolf Bjelke, Deborah Shapiro:
I buy a lot of stuff from the bargain section of 1/2 price books (50 cents). This was one of 'em... lotsa cool pictures and the narrative is moderately interesting.

I'm up to page 300 in the 870-page Harry Potter.
My plan is to have it done by Thursday.

So far it's really good, more mature than the others.

Especially considering how much swearing's going on this book...there's been a few 'hells,' one 'dammit,' and even Uncle Vernon shouted "No more effing owls!"

Good lord, J.K....

Motherless Brooklyn (can't remember the author)

It's about this guy with Tourette's who's involved with some low level Mafiosos in Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn. Good stuff.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress - Dai Sijie
Very sweet story of two boys sent to live in a remote village to be "re-educated" during China's cultural revolution.

Roads - Larry McMurtry
nonfiction about travel on America's main highways.

Empire Falls - Richard Russo
Just began this story of a dying Maine industrial town.
