Near the end of Soundtrack of Our Lives' Friday set at the 9:30 club, singer Ebbot Lundberg asked the crowd in the chairless venue to sit down. Though the floor by that point in the evening was a minefield of spent beverage cups, cigarette butts and puddles of wasted booze, the fans complied. Such was the reverence that Lundberg and his mates in the Swedish sextet had earned during a hook- and irony-filled 90-minute set.

Soundtrack of Our Lives has been recording since 1995, but the band was ignored stateside until the recent release of the CD "Behind the Music." Serious portions of the new record seem to be a homage to Pink Floyd. The chord changes and psychedelic and absurd lyrics of "Mind the Gap" clearly come from guys who listened to Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" more than once.

But onstage, Soundtrack exudes a variety of less staid British influences. Guitarist Matthias Barjed wore a Jolly Roger jacket as Pete Townshend would during the Who's mod period. Barjed and fellow guitarist Ian Person showed off an array of Townshendesque leaps and windmilling, while drummer Fredrik Sandsten showed he has carte blanche to pound out as many fills as Keith Moon once did. "Nevermore" sounded like Oasis after a double dose of a really good mood-brightening medication. The power chord riffs that carry Soundtrack's radio-ready single "Sister Surround" came off even sturdier live. "21st Century Rip Off" had a Stonesy drums-and-guitar riff that kindled a burst of spontaneously synchronized headbanging among the fans and band members.

During "21st Century Rip Off," Lundberg, who is bearded and built like Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, jumped from the stage and struck messianic poses as he walked among his flock. "If I'm Jesus, we're all in trouble," Lundberg said after a fan indicated he was buying into the act. Many of those sitting among the butts and spills could relate to such exuberance.

woo hoo! i'm not the only one who loves paloalto. wow, that's refreshing.

however, much to my dismay, i have to work late this evening and will miss the show. my ex-boyfriend will be there and says he'll take notes for me, but it just won't be the same.

have fun you lucky kids.

how was the show? i ended up getting sick and didnt' do anything all weekend, still feelin' pretty crappy...

The show was incredible.

I'm gonna let Mr. Duffy describe it in a review (which is to be posted today........I hope), but at one point, the lead singer climbed off the stage and out into the crowd and made everyone sit on the dirty, nasty floor of Little Brother's, where I swear I saw a woman smash a beer bottle earlier in the night.

You have to respect a man who can do that.
