Why the brick wall emoticon? I can think of a few reasons: Because there's no point in playing down there unless you're already riding a wave of hype? Annoyance at a limited group pretending to represent an entire city? Perplexed at their failure to affiliate with DW, which seems like a no-brainer for a Columbus/SXSW project?

Ha, well I was more feeling bad for the bands (WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER) who think they are applying for some official SXSW thing when it's obviously an unofficial thing..

The Facebook page seems full of bands who think they've now submitted to play an official SXSW event..

Ah, yes. I don't know what to think about that. Yeah, you get your name on the website and in the program if you're in an official showcase, but otherwise I'm not sure it makes a difference anymore from a practical standpoint whether your event is official or unofficial. My guess is the crowd at this will be 90% Columbus people either way.

Do these bands know they can book a gig at Ruby Tuesday once a year by themselves?

Nothing like playing in a record store 15 blocks north of 6th St. in Austin at 2pm on Wednesday.

I talked to the organizers about it. They're good people who work hard at playing music.

They're not trying to rip anyone off, or take advantage of anyone. I think they're just trying to sidestep the process of actually being asked to formally play SXSW.

In a way, it's clever and resourceful. But in a way, creating a day just for Columbus bands, that's not formally a part of the fest really cuts down on the whole networking that might typically be associated with playing a show sandwiched between bands from all over. Plus, I think it's better to be put alongside other buzz bands from the nation, rather than next to whatever Columbus band can afford to travel for the week.

And I'm pretty sure most people frown upon the kid who gets upset he wasn't invited to the big party, so he throws his own party right next door. That party is usually kind of sad.

HOWEVER...it may just be different enough and clever enough that it gets a bit of noteriety, and maybe a little press. It's really pretty aggressive. So, I definitely wish them well.

Sure it is. It's just clever enough.

When you don't think you'll be asked to play SXSW for whatever year it is in a row, and you can't buy your way into a slot, how do you make it happen?

From what I can gather, it's actually taken a lot of work to put together.

I'm not saying I agree with it. I believe that there's far more value in actually getting a SXSW slot, and depending on who you ask who has done it before, that value may be very little anyway.

Post subject:  Re: We Are Columbus Ohio "Ohio X Southwest"

To add one more thing, I think the thing that bothers me the most about it, is that there's completely a chance that 98% of the bands who participate could be Columbus' B or C level bands.

If an outing like this can only send our second or third stringers who are less memorable, less aritistic and less original, then it doesn't really help anyone to be there at all.

You end up with a roster of bands who aren't on a level to be exposed nationally, and anyone who attends could easily assume that Columbus has a yawn-worthy music scene.

Clever + Music Business = Fail anyway

I know a few people who have done those non sanctioned events. I think the biggest benefit is that they had a good time. I do know one guy that did a corporate thing down there and actually got paid really well.

What they should do is make the Columbus show into a fundraiser for the travel to the Austin show then take everybody down in a big truck and a van or two or something. If you do a decent show and then everybody that's going down throws in a $20 that would probably cover all the travel. You know, if everybody wants to work together and save some money.

Post subject:  Re: We Are Columbus Ohio "Ohio X Southwest"

Ive been helping out with this recently, and don't think its a bad idea at all. Its ambitious and a great opportunity for any one that goes down to this event. Official or unofficial, Austin will be infested with all the right people that might walk into that venue. The worst out come of this is that 13 bands go down to sxsw and have a great time playing a set and then checkin out a kick ass city when its offering more music than any where else in the world.

As for the bands going down...

Karate Coyote
Town Monster
Floorwalkers
Andy Shaw Band
Joey Hebdo
and a few more that I am not thinking of at the moment.

So you can be negative towards the effort, or supportive and happy for the bands trying to get there band name out to the world. Lots more bands are going down to Austin independently to play house shows or unofficial showcases. This is just taking it up to another level.

This guy shared his animosity:

Quote:
In the videos, Dawn smirks as she's shown in a variety of cozy sweaters and scarves, singing the carols in generic-Grey's Anatomy-chick-voice, a vocal style that probably needs no further explanation than that. After you hear it five times (this will happen within the first half-hour of watching pretty much any program on television), you're ambivalent. Ten times, you're annoyed. Fifteen times, Dawn's voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Twenty times and it's like fire ants gnawing at your crotch. Twenty-five times and you'll want to go all Elvis and shoot the TV. Thirty times and you'll want to drive your car into the nearest Hyundai. Thirty-five times and you'll want to drive an out-of-control Army tank over every new vehicle in a Hyundai lot. Forty times and you'll want Dawn to contract a case of terminal laryngitis. Forty-five times and you'll want to amputate every last one of Santa's reindeer. Fifty times and you'll wish Jesus announced it was time to stop celebrating his birthday.

To be fair - I think the organizers made it pretty clear that they are not part of the main SXSW event. To imply that they are somehow tricking people into going is a bit of a reach... (Nobody's forcing the bands to go). Also, i don't think anyone here should be leveling charges against anyone else about being a limited group giving the appearance of representing Columbus as a whole - this charge is basically leveled by everyone against some group in Columbus, given how fractured the music community in Columbus is. (A lot of the collectives and whatnot were started specifically because they thought that certain ... outlets ... were not representing Columbus as whole - so they went off and did their own thing)

A question that I have - Why not be happy for them, instead of being so sure that they have bad intentions? Or - if DW thinks it's wiser that they be included somehow, then why not offer your services to them and help them out? Don't get me wrong - There are some things that confuse me about the event - but the reaction here i think is just about as baffling.

I'd like to see an official list of the A, B and C level bands in Columbus, ranked according to artistic merit. They should put out a yearly ranking, and post it on donewaiting every year, so that we can know which bands are good without having to listen to them.

*snark* *snark* *snark* *snark*

half-joking.
