Can't believe no one has talked about this article yet.

Funny how it's yet another 1000 word whine-fest about how no one supports local music (which is absolutely false), but the paper only gives Wes Flexner 200 words to talk about a label that was just glorified by one of the country's finest music writers in one of the world's greatest magazines.

Why don't you put CDR on the Other cover, instead of giving another awful band space to complain about how no one comes to their shows?

"If you build it, they will come."

I thought it was mostly embarrassing. No fucking way would I put my name, real or fake, on that article. That said, I hope that Angry Andy gets to write the next column.

It was a little insulting for the other paper to tell us they didn't have the money to print much about CDRVII and then open up the paper to see that. However...I want the Other Paper to stay in print, so fuck it.

It's sloppy to try to keep readership up through lightning rod bullshit and it's a really bad idea to alienate the people in Columbus that are helping keep it on the map (I'm not just talking CDR), but if that article makes a bunch of people pick up the paper and gets 'em some website hits so TOP can have some readership stats which might help stay in business a little longer, fine w/ me.

six hours required?

maybe if you spent more time promoting and less time preparing to "advance in the entertainment industry" you might "make it".

Trains across the sea :boohoo:

What I read of that article was pretty weak. I quit after the part where he talks about how you go into debt recording an album yourself, play a record release, a few friends buy your album, and that’s it.

If you don’t bother to play out of town shows and tour widely, of course, your self released records are going to be “failures”. If people are into your band though, you WILL sell records on tour, but you have to get out there.

Failure and success being relative terms, too when talking about underground music.

For the record, my post above should probably have had a “?” rather than a “!”. I am not exclaiming anyone as a Christian. I was responding in a smart ass way to Bo’s “Who?”.

I have no idea who Trains Across the Sea are…or what their faith might be.

Although, seriously...screw Christians.

I blame the Alive for giving these bands coverage. EVEN CHRISTIAN RUN MEDIA CANNOT HELP YOU PAY YOUR RENT ON TIME!

While it is true that there is some support for local original music, I don't think there is enough.

I really think that is all the dude was trying to say. He wasn't talking about how YOU don't support local music enough. I fail to find anything to rage about in that article.

I also think it is hilarious that you people think the other paper should dedicate a larger article to an article published in a larger publication. They gave it it 200 words, yet people are bitching about Andy just because his article got more space? Pot calling the kettle black? :boohoo:

I'm not so much worried about the Other Paper covering the fact that CDR was written up in the Wire -- not many locals who aren't in the music scene would care -- what I was confused about is that there was no (appropriately large enough) write up about the seventh annual, two-day, festival that brought in bands and spectators from all over the midwest and beyond.

CDR's humility is probably what keeps them in business, but I think I'm one of many that thinks they should splatter their successes all over town like Communist propaganda -- so if you're in the local journalism business, writing about these guys should be second nature, cause it's the best example of do-it-yourself imagineering in our city next to the Dave Thomas autobiography.

Countering/surrounding a blurb about CDRVII with a much larger editorial about how there's no local love is just bad form.

You think this might be the source of their frustration? Six hours? After two hours I'd say, if you haven't figured it out, yet, you may want to forget it. How is there any magic after six hours? Maybe take a break and do some studying on your own and meet up again in a month or so.

I am thrilled with the sucess of CDR and the fact that they do what they do with an ecletic (sic) musical sensability cements thier collective passion for music. The fact is that there are several camps of music fans and artists, the ones who scour the record bins, internet and friend's houses to get the music fix that is never quite itched. And others for whom music is a passion but also somewhat of a commodity, or a ringtone, or a fashion statement. The ones who seem to complain the loudest seem to be in the latter camp, while the former may hold some bitterness or grudges that will be cured by the next great song the flies out of thier speakers.
It took an article in Entertainment Weekly to get people to notice the Turks, Gaunt, Jenny Mae and TJSA and even then their songs were never really in rotation on CD101 or WCBE and their shows only became crowded after that (well except for Jenny who never was a draw here.)
Validation comes from your friends, peers and those whom you respect, don't expect it from others. My biggest loss of having kids is that I have missed out on so many great shows and bands the past five years. I've only seen TNV once (at Used Kids years ago) and have had to miss shows that I really wanted to see (Necropolis covering Gaunt), but when I see the passion that CDR brings and the support they have, I am completly warmed by it. Think big picture as you sit in your back yard.

Thank God that article was appropriately large enough.
