funny dude. seems to me that the pros always get carried away with quality sound and are always ready to pounce on the guy not "getting it right". but quite honestly i think that's their prerogative. i don't fault a band for wanting their 5 tons of equipment to sound right.
not once did i ever bitch to a sound guy though... a few times i asked for more monitor or whatever but that was it. don't need much when you have one guitar effect, drum and bass and yer loud as all fuck. never complained, never whined, never said a damn thing.... minus that dick head in dayton.

I've never really complained either, or felt like I had to with few exceptions. We have a ton of shit, and all kinds of things can go wrong. So, I'll typically ask for more vox in the monitors, but that's about it. If something just isn't sitting right in the mix, I know it's because we're working with a guy that's not familiar with us, and that's okay. It happens.
But we've also had guys napping at the board with their feet up turn off a vocal mic mid-song. We've a guy who didn't have our sampler running... even though it was the first song and we'd just soundchecked it. We've had a guy have drum mics clipped on, but not plugged in because, as he said, "Sorry, I'm stoned." But for every one of those, there's a dozen shows where the sound guy is at least competent, and probably twice as many greats soundguys as the complete losers.
So, it's definitely not an issue with whether or not soundguys are generally worth their pay.

Eyewitness account:

I was at Ravari Room a few years back and actually overheard the drummer from the Kyle Sowashes tell Tubbs the sound guy to not make them sound *too* good.

I think he added ...dude ... make us sound like a garage rock band.

Pa is just there to amplify your music. So...either you sound good our you sound like shit, only louder. Peace out..

BTW, check out Bronson Bunny Deatwish at Comfest 12:45 offramp on glorious friday afternoon....we will be soundchecking. I dont need to request a not so good sound, we will do it on our own.

agreed. most sound guys do their job and do it well.
once the eq's and vox are set we are usually good to go so we don't demand much. who knows what the hell it sounds like out in the room anyways..

You didn't. It's a fictional translation of your words as it relates to other posts in this and another thread* in the same forum, otherwise known as a joke. I attempt to make those occasionally. Sorry.

Ooooooooohhhhh I get it. I get it. I'm not very good at message boards. ha ha. Actually that is funny. I got nervous for a sec, I though i had drunkenly posted some ahole remark at some point.

But yeah, I try not to name names of people in the local biz that I don't like unless it's really really bad. But there are a few sound engineers (I actually called Tubbs a sound guy a few weeks ago and corrected me. ha ha) around town that I really do like. Tubbs is really good, and the newer fella at S&G... Matt? I'm blanking on his name. A couple of the Secret Song bands liked him so much that we're going to have him do sound at our showcase at A&R next weekend. And honestly I have a lot of respect for Sean at Circus. That's a really really hard room. I have done sound there a couple of times. The first time it was fine, the second time it did not sound nearly as good as when he does it. But I'm not a live guy really. I just try to pay attention. Who else is good... oh Brian at the Alrosa. I worked with him a bunch at CD101, and have been to several of his shows. He's awesome. Those are the first few that come to mind. I'm probably forgetting somebody... usually I'm drinking too much to notice. :D

Being good at message boards isn't necessarily something to be proud of, anyway.

That is absolutely false. Obama will stay in bed with Big Sound to make sure that the right people keep getting the scratch (that is code for $$$$). The bands, however, will be subjected to the decrees of the Death Panels, who decide whether their sets are worth the effort of setting the levels.

Yeah I've been avoiding that thread because I can't attend Comfest this year and it makes me sad... My Dad's getting married in Michigan that weekend. (no part of that is awesome) That's twice that's happened to me. Why doesn't everybody in the world know not to get married on the last weekend of June if you know somebody that lives in Columbus.

Couldn't agree more about Sean @ Circus. Circus is weird, and very easily sounds very bad. I've been to several shows there where standing in front of the stage sounded like like I was across the street. Well, I'm exaggerating. But things were not properly mixed, to say the least. The room and the gear doesn't help either, and are things anyone there running sound has to overcome. Having played there w/ Sean working though, and even seeing a few shows, makes a difference. I haven't played S&G in months, but as I recall... I was happier with their sound more consistently than practically anywhere else locally. I always had a great time playing there too, I should do something about that. Dan at Ruby's as well. Probably the best stage sound I've heard here happened there.

If you're in a band with 5 tons of equipment and you don't have your own soundman, you're probably a band with 5 tons of equipment who should bring their own soundman or maybe consider getting rid of 5 tons of equipment. I am not aware of any "pros" out there in rock and roll fantasyland who are ready to pounce on a soundman. That's just slow or limited intellectual or emotional development.

I am also not aware of any "pros".
