Anyone else get this email?

We do everything we have heard to get into Comfest.
Apply
Get Mark to come to our gigs
Volunteer
Even managed to book a gig a Vics

But this is just too much. Go play espresso yourself FOR FREE.

Subject: music openings

Hey Musician Friends! Spring is around the corner. Hopefully no more snowed out nights here. People will be wanting to get out and see you. This year I have been asked to join the music selection committee for Comfest. There is still alot to do and my input and notes may help. I'd like to invite you in again to hear you and see your stage presence as it has developed. Please choose a set and invite all you friends and fans.

Peace

Eric Ahlteen
Espresso Yourself Music Cafe

How to read this schedule. Next to the date will be hours that are available to play.

COVER
There will still be a door cover most music nights. The cover is usually $3-5
The house is still splitting the cover with groups 50/50, once there have been at least 10 covers,

Some groups have been donating their cover to the house.

That has been very helpful as we are coming out of the first three years with
major losses. This will be our year to break even! Yeah!

We'd like to thank you for helping be a part of this vision of a music venue
here in the north end.

Thanks, Eric, Chelsea and Ben

Sigh. This is really unfortunate, and I apologize on behalf of the Entertainment Committee.

Fuck.

Please disregard this bulk email. It should have never been sent, and it has been addressed with the sender.

We have added a few new members who maybe don't understand how this might look to bands to who work really hard trying to get a slot at ComFest. I am sure he didn't mean it, but obviously that email comes off as pay to play, and I agree, you have every right to completely offended. It was completely inappropriate.

The only thing you mention that you have to do to get into to ComFest is Apply. Period. Volunteering IS helpful, but it doesn't mean you will get in, and it doesn't mean you won't either.

Play as much as you can, and play different venues, if you can.

Once again, I am sorry that you received this email. It was a rookie mistake on the part of the sender, and was in no way sent on behalf of ComFest. He is really a nice guy, I can't imagine that he meant harm. New members get over-zealous. I hope this explains what transpired. If anyone is interested, I am registered at Pitchforks'rus.com.

One more thing, the Entertainment Committee meetings are open to anyone up until we actually start selection. I strongly encourage new members. Next meeting is March 2nd, at the shelterhouse in Goodale Park at 7:30. If anyone is interested in joining this, or any other committee, please let me know and I will get you appropriate contact information. We really need new Safety, Clean Up and Recycling, Volunteer Recruitment members. Media could use a few too, I think.

Thanks.

I already Western Unioned him 3g's so my new band "Baby Dicks Crushed In A Vice" could headline the NewYorRican stage. Um, refund at point of purchase?

Raise your hand if you hadn't heard the Cowbilly Hippy Band (several comittee members I heard) are booking "Comfest Showcases" at Vics. Vics IS the new comfest hq right?

Thats OK, I see you aren't wearing your sock puppet. 8)

At least those shows are paying gigs.

How many meetings do I have to go to to pimp my favorite bar Red Rabbit?
Where's the love for Rumba, Ravari, and Rubies?
If I pick up trash can I pimp Bernies?

On second thought.

It should be no suprise that there will be some cross over between promoters and comfest. Some people have been around a long time and columbus is a small town.

Sucking up to Mark and playing some particular bars are all part of the game. So not such a big deal.

But this expresso yourself thing breaks new ground.
Come fill my failing bar and donate your time? In Powell even. COME ON.
SEROIUSLY

New or not that should be basic common sense. Even I would not do something that dumb.

Putting away the pitchfork and torch and going home. I was hoping for a good old fashoned witch burning though.

Maybe I will wear my sockpuppet for a while longer. I kind of like it.

March is no good for us and besides I think the sock puppet is probably going to be more entertaining than us at the present time. Maybe April or something?

I'm pretty sure it was meant to be a reference to A Bridge Too Far, as if to say that Comfest has over-reached its bounds by a step.

It was only by raw pattern recognition that the reference occurred to me, since I've neither read the book nor seen the movie, and I hadn't even known what the title meant until I looked it up to make the link.

If you call a casting couch PtP. To me it comes off as "come to ME to show your wares, AND do the legwork to promote MY venue, and maybe I'll consider you after I see how well you draw". I played EY once, with some sort of ambiguous door split arrangement (three bands that night, one was his own), and we got zilch on the "disclaimer" that none of the patrons actually specified that they were there to see us. We didn't draw, and I'll play for zilch up-front. I just don't dig chin-wag, especially righteous chin-wag.

The appropriate thing to do is pull him from the committee. Maybe it was an innocent mistake on his part, but the process has enough trouble being perceived as somewhat impartial (nothing is completely impartial). Assholes are going to pucker even more than usual when bands see this guy walk into their shows, or is he only stationed at the Fortress of Solitude.

That was also my take on it.

as somebody who has been involved in almost every aspect of comfest over the past 15 years (vendor, volunteer, performer, emcee, etc) there isn't a single line in that e-mail that ISN'T fucking offensive.

pulling him off committee & telling old boy "maybe next year" really would be the best way to save face. that shit's just tacky in every way possible. and it IS going to be fodder for those who feel comfest is all "who you know"

It wasn't necessarily unethical, imo, but an opportunistic move at the least. It's unusual for people in his position to be so forthright about their potential gain, which is what makes for the predatory vibe. Really, all he was trying to do was make his presence known, so that the bands would make their own assumptions about quid pro quo and clamor to him. A better known place like Vic's can afford to be more subtle about it. I'm not trying to defend his execution, which evidently went awry, as the very existence of this thread confirms, but I see what he did there.™

Btw, that there is any potential correlation at all is the sort of thing that nullifies these disclaimers. It's like when you see those contest rules that explicitly state that there's "NO PURCHASE NECESSARY." It may be technically true, but you don't really believe it.
