So I don't know if its temporary frustration or self pity, but I feel anymore like the Columbus music scene is too clicky. If you're not into hipster-indie music, or metal, then you really aren't that important to any music fans here. Sure all kinds of genres come through town, but every kid in a band in Columbus is a carbon coby of 40 other kids in bands. Where is the diversity? Even the guys playing bad jam music and Dave Matthews covers make a living playing the campus area. I'm aware that the world is unfair, but this is getting ridiculous. Am I alone is these thoughts, or am I just completely wrong?

p.s. when I say hipster-indie music, I don't mean bands like Grizzly Bear, The Flaming Lips, and/or Animal Collective (they're good). I mean the entire genre of bands that Pitchfork creams their pants over.

In essence there is really only two effective cliques in Columbus. Those hipster-doofuses who listen to crappy music and those hipster-doofuses who listen to good music. The question one must ask one's self is "what clique am I really in?" Once you have the true answer to that question, then you should stab yourself in the neck with a rusty pair of scissors because, really, the world does not need any more hipster-doofuses regardless of musical taste.

come clean, mr. bond:

you should probably quit bellyaching about what the lo-fi crowd thinks of you and just make the music you want to make. if people want to like it, they'll like it. if they don't, they won't. it's that simple.

Has anyone told Tristannus about this thread? How can this thread be happening without Tristannus?

HIPSTERS ARE PEOPLE TOO.
hipster hipster hipster
haha

secondly, as many of us on this board can attest, bitching about "everyone else" to "everyone else," never helps you find the audience you're looking for.

and to be honest, you music isnt bad, but after taking a stance, i'd be hard pressed not to bash you band, or at least tell people not to go see it.

sorry if you don't like my opinion.
we're both entitled to them.

Perhaps I should have been more specific in my first post. I did not come on here to plug my band (that would go under the HYPE section) or bash the scene. I was just curious if anyone else in Columbus has experienced similar frustration. A lot of the replies have reminded me of the bumper stickers that say "Quit Bitching and Start a Revolution". To be honest I think there is a lot of great music in this town, it just never seems to get the support that it probably deserves. Yes I realize that we are the scene and we all have the individual power to change it. That being said, over the years I've noticed an increase in apathy towards up and coming bands around here (I'm not just talking about music projects that I've been apart of). Individual taste is what makes music so amazing and diverse. I wish people would embrace this more often. So I'm asking if other people have similar feelings about our music scene or not. I didn't come one here to do anything more than that.

The Columbus scene is huge and if you don't go out a couple nights a week to actually see bands it's tough to find the good ones. Many of the bands last less than a year and if Nick Schuld is involved it may only be a couple of hours.

If the only time you go out is when your band plays you aren't going to meet any new people. That might not be you but it applies to a lot of frustrated bands.

A free tip from a music scout: Flu Faker plays tonight at Rumba. This is only their 3rd show and they haven't released anything. Try it, you will like it.

Columbus will be the next Cleveland.

and seriously this subject is stupid. If you feel your band isnt receiving the merit it deserves then you

a. just arent that good
b. have no clue how to market your band

The worlds not against you, they just arent down with what your serving.

At least since the mid 80's it's always been this way in Columbus. The most hipster popular bands are usually pretty bad, but they have a lot of friends. The really good original bands go relatively unnoticed (in Columbus) and eventually break up. Basically, a hipster popular band in Columbus is hipster popular before they even play their first gig. That's just the way of the Columbus world. If you want to be a hipster popular band, then you need to be popular with the hipsters and then start a band.

See, it's not so hard after all.

as far as i know everybody wants to hear new bands/music.
as far as i know people would love to see new bands (in town) that AREN'T composed of people they already know.
as far as i know nobody values pitchfork's opinion in the slightest (as it is just that).
