I got my letter saying, "We don't want you to perform but you can volunteer to work at the festival if you'd like! That's a worthy substitute! If you do, we MAY let you play sometime in the future."

Yeah, right.

Last year was my first time at ComFest. I'd just gotten to town. I saw some great music but I also saw a LOT of crap. They think I can't do better than that but they'll let me pick up their garbage? Really uncool.

I heard the Jambulance moved to Atlanta.

We got our letter. Nice font.

Welcome to town! I got the same email. I'm volunteering anyway, it's a cool festival and a lot of fun. Just curious, are you not going to volunteer because of the email/letter? Or because you can do better than the crap bands but didn't get a slot?

Both, I reckon. They tell me I'm not good enough to play their festival but IF I work for them they MAY let me play? Like my music's not good enough on it's own merit? No, thanks.

your stuff's plenty good enough, but comfest can't book every act in town. if they did, the show would last for weeks, not days. i do understand how that would rub one the wrong way though.

You're right; they can't book every act in town. But some of the stuff they put onstage is really bad. I KNOW I'm not that bad! Are you telling me it's political?

Whoo-ee. If anyone could follow Ugly Stick, It's definitely Starship. Better put on your Big Boy Boots, Miranda Sound. Just sayin'. Statistics show that playing after Starship is the #1 cause of bands breaking up.

mickey thomas is one of the great singers in rock history...the simple mention of his name makes me want to throw on an elvin bishop record.

Well, whatever. I think it's in poor taste to send the email they sent me. If they don't want me playing, don't ask me to work with the suggestion that it MAY help me get a performing slot in the future. Bad form.

i thought it was common knowledge that if you don't or haven't volunteered then you don't play

I could seriously imagine michelle shocked dishing out some vegan chili or something...that's not all that much of a stretch, right?

That's right: you could imagine it. Translation = she didn't actually do it.

Show me where it says on the application that you can only play if you've volunteered in the past.

to be fair, we don't really know that.

perhaps her status as an international recording superstar allowed her just a tad more wiggle room than the average local band? I'm just guessing, here.

I'm pretty damn sure we'd know if she'd ever volunteered. It'd be big news.

However, I'd take issue with your use of the word "superstar." Heck, I might also take issue with your use of the term "average local band" when referring to me! Ha!

I am happy to announce that Todd May of the Lillybandits will also be playing. This is a free event with great music with a chance to sign up to volunteer if you are interested and is open to every one.

Volunteering at Comfest gets you tokens and a t-shirt and is a great way to contribute to our community. You also meet good people. Not such a bad deal.

Does volunteering automatically get you into ComFest? No, but I assure you that it is a factor and when we get down to the last few spots to fill, it can be, and often is the deal breaker.

Hope to see you all there.

Oh by the way, Michelle S. is so excited to preform at comfest, she reduced her fee drastically, and to cut our expenses will be crashing on couches of comfest committee members rather than staying at hotels and we are giving her tokens instead of a food allowance. She seems like a really neat lady and I cant wait to hear her speak and play.
