i for one was turned off by the review posted here some weeks back.

closeminded?

yes i am.

maybe i didn't want the record ruined by what "could" have been a lack luster performance.

if it was a great show, sucks for me.

Post subject:  New Pornographers Show

I went to it. I didn't see you so I wondered if you went. I got there at 11:00 just as they were getting ready to go on. One of those shows that Dougan started right at 9:00 rather than the usual 10:00-10:30. So I missed both openers, unfortunately. Now I enjoyed the show. I like the albums, but I think they are better live, even if it is a sort of made up superband. Most of the vocals were handled by Carl Newman on guitar with Neko Case as background/supporting vocals. The rest were her songs, dual vocals between the two and a few by the drummer, Kurt Dahle, who also suppled alot of the background vocals. The harmonies between the three and occasionally four with Todd Fancey were pretty good. The musice was fairly melodic/pop oriented. For the others that grumble about how loud it was, well, I saw Neko Case solo and even on her more country style she tends to very pronounced with her vocals. In this case, obviously, she would be louder in this music style and she showed the wear and tear of that when they came back for a 1 song third encore. As a whole I thought it was a short set which only lasted an hour with the first encore, but they took few breaks with the crowd. But they did talk to the crowd a few times and seemed pretty loose, though it probably helped that Neko had already been here. Not much of a review, but hope that at least helps out a little.

I had read a review on another site about a show where the Pornographers seemed to be going through the motions but that was very much not the case last night. A good sized crowd for the show and the crowd was very much into it. The band fed off the crowd's enthusiam. It seemed as though quite a few folks from around the state drove it for the show (they asked and did have a little light banter with the crowd).

They sounded sharp and tight. The harmonies were great live and they seemed very happy with the response on the band's first visit to Columbus. They played alot of songs off of both albums, including "Letter from an Occupant", "The Slow Descent into Alcoholism", "The Laws have Changed", "Electric Version", "All for Swinging you Around" plus took crowd requests during the encores.

The show, with three encores, was about an hour and twenty minutes long - not bad for a band with only two albums of material.

The 2 opening bands were the Organ, also from Vancouver, an all-female band whose sound reminded me of the Smiths and the Cure - quite nice - and the One Man Organist, a guy who played every instrument including guitar and drums, with alot of stuff strapped to his body. He was quite a sight to see and created quite a racket - not quite my cup of tea.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable night out at Little Brothers and a very good show.

it just doesn't seem like live is thier thang. the sound seemed muted half the time, but the band was tight. clearly canadian, check out thier teeths.

i like the records, but wouldn't drive to far to catch the live show. fair to blah.

lonesome organist on the other hand is a phenom waiting to happen.
someone needs to give him plenty of money to design his own one-man-band machine. screw the duos, this guy did it all by himself.

the organ, well, keep trying.
