I think Abell is awesome. I've heard some vague warnings, too. (Mostly along the "Abell is good at solid state, but tubes are another story" lines.) But I haven't heard anything concrete enough to think the paranoia is warranted.

A friend of mine is an extremely critical (as in, he likes to criticize) gigging jazz guitarist in town who has taken his tube Ampeg 1x12 guitar combo there for 20 years and raves about them and their knowledge of his goofy amp. I've always taken my Fender Bassman there, and have always had great results.

On a recommendation from the , I used for one re-tubing. It actually worked less good after that servicing. He was quick to fix it. But I remember some mysterious charges on the invoice, which wasn't clearly itemized. He was a nice guy, and knows his gear, too. But Abell has been better in my personal experience.

Abell, nothing but praise. They rebuilt my Fender Bassman and its been a workhorse ever since. They also rebuilt my 87 JCM 800. It was a little odd right after but they corrected any problems after servicing @ no charge.

I once brought in an old guitar pedal and it is the only thing they couldnt help me on. Reason is that their was no schematic available for it.

Abell is a good place.

I've used Abell and Randy in the past.

As far as I know, Randy is the guy if you own a blackface or silverface Fender amp. He is the guy who knows what they are *supposed* to sound like and knows what tricks to pull with those particular circuits. He did my most recent repair and I was 100% happy with his work.

Prior to this last time, I had used Abell pretty much exclusively and they had always done good work with my amps.

I'd say you're in pretty good shape with either one of 'em.

Randy kicked my 70's twin's ass, he made it sound better than it ever did. He is certainly one of the best tube amp guys in columbus, but he usually takes a while to fix it and I always end up having to go pick it up from him outside of a bar or something.

But as far as the work itself is concerned he does a great fuckin' job.

100% of the time if you have a tube amp, take it to fifth ave fret shop and have randy work on it. when the super got knocked over and all the tubes broke and a buncha pots got fucked up, he fixed it in a week for less than $300.
