ERIKA CAREY + BETTY
Have you ever seen the lunar module piloted by Neil Armstrong in ‘69? It was little more than a galvanized waste can outfitted with a rudimentary computer and a couple lawn chairs. Erika Carey is launching her instrument of choice – the accordion – for the moon….Carey possesses a voice which is at once bold, and full of nuance – like swigging moonshine to wash down your collard greens. Imagine the Memphis soul sound filtered through a dusty speaker cone with your feet up on the porch railing… Inevitable comparisons come to mind when listening to the Calamities: Fairport Convention –heartbreaking tales of love sung by ex-lovers, Ray Charles playing country music - demonstrating how close the genre’s really are ( like kissing cousins) or Otis Redding and Carla Thomas on King and Queen – especially when listening to Todd May duet with Erika on “Five Years” or “Simple Bastard” The telepathic interplay of bassist Steven McGann and drummer Mark Spurgeon infuse it with a spirit like The Hodges Brothers on Al Green’s best records, and Betty Blockinger on violin (or fiddle, depends on which side of the Mason Dixon you reside) plus guitarist Jamie Ball twist the amplifier knobs at mission control. Theirs is a distinctly modern take on the classic soul attitude pioneered in Memphis, and given a uniquely rock and roll profile ….Amplitude modulation never sounded so sweet.

MISS MOLLY

Miss Molly is a sultry mix of alternative, folk, rock, and jazz. The music moves you, makes you dance, and fills your ears with passion and deep musical theme. Lead by vocalist and rhythm guitar player, Molly Winters, her style is a strong vibrato with a range that can be low and warm as well as high and powerful. Lead guitarist, John Auker is an amazing blend of jazz, rock, and powerful atmospheric blends. He sings and writes, and balances out the sound perfectly. Nathan Foli, on drums exudes precise, clean, and creative rhythms building a driving, grooving force throughout the music. Larry Cook, a graduate bass player is amazing on both the upright and electric bass, filling the tunes with jaw-dropping, innovative lines, irresistible melodies, and intense rhythms. The music is rocking, meaning full, interesting, grooving, and above all, passionate. The band is on the cutting edge of the Mid-west music scene with a style of music that is as hard to categorize as it is to stop listening to. The unique diversity of Miss Molly’s music makes it easy for the band to capture the hearts and ears of any music fan. The band has performed in many local Columbus venues such as the Lifestyles Community Pavilion, the Thirsty Ear, Skully's Music-Diner, Little Brothers, Oldfield’s On High and the Rumba Cafe. The band's repertoire focuses on passionate, sultry, and dance inspiring mix of originals, as well as cover songs ranging from artists like Nancy Sinatra, Janis Joplin, and the Beatles to Hank Williams, Tom Petty, Nirvana, and Kathleen Edwards. Miss Molly is a young, fresh, and professional group of musicians that has performed for concerts, night clubs, weddings, festivals, private parties, and more, making this band as beautiful and flexible as the flowing branches of a willow tree.
