Any other Moviola fans out there? I know there was a lot going on Saturday night but y'all missed the stealthiest, best show of the weekend by not showing up. Most of their records don't really represent where they are at present, save their last release, Rumors of the Faithful, which is stellar.
If you aren't into mellow rock, leave now. The tempo never surges much above a feel-good groove and doesn't have to as it succeeds without hammering. All of the members trade vocal duties and sing well together to boot. They used to switch instruments a lot, which bothered me in terms of the flow of the live show, but they don't do that as much anymore. Piano, acoustic, guitar, bass and drums are the mainstays but they also pulled out a mandolin and had a guest sit in on the saw, which was eerier and cooler than the theremin, I determined. Barry Hensley sometimes joins them on pedal steel but he wasn't there this weekend.
At first I wanted to compare them to the Dead (early records only, as they are NOT a jam band), but now that I think about it they remind me more of an updated version of the Band, filtered through all the genres of music that have emerged since they were around.
The songs are tuneful rock songs but they are treated intelligently and the lyrics are top-shelf. Check this band out next time they are playing and let me know what you think. And buy their last record too.
