SXSW has been around since 1987. Just like the CMJ Music Marathon in NYC, SXSW used to be a place where labels would send A&R people to check out bands to potentially sign. Those days, I fear, are long gone. Now both festivals consist of either a) unsigned bands who are hoping to make some connections or b) bands that are on labels that are doing label showcases.
