The past couple of albums sound like he is finally waking up from a long nap of mediocre songs with sleepy vocals. Nice to see he still has some fire left.

yeah, honest-to-gawd, save for a few years of bad albums and an unexplained desire to hang around jeff lynne, i've always had a giant soft spot for tom petty.

even more for mike campbell. that cat is as rock and roll as keef.

and if led zep had sounded more like that "big mountain fudgecake" video at the top of this thread, i might've liked them a lot more . . .

It was pretty sweet when they played it on SNL too. Surprised to see Tom rocking sans guitar, but I think it's working for him.

It is pretty darn cool. The SNL performance reminded me of Bob Dylan opening up a show in Columbus the same way nearly two decades ago. Dylan had a helluva lot more swagger, of course. A lot of Petty's career reminds me of what Dylan already did or might have done. That's not a bad thing. I grew up adoring Damn The Torpedoes and have always been a fan. It's not surprising, either, considering Petty grew up with a fair obsession of the Byrds and Dylan. It is Petty going full-on blues as he ages, just like Dylan. Who doesn't, though? Dylan will die on the road as a blues act as he always planned. It's where, "everybody's movin’ if they ain’t already there..."

You could almost say it's not ballsy or new but it should please what's left of the Generation Y-ers who slammed Bud Light to "Freefalling" without ever digging very deep into the Dylan catalog or what's left of the Woodstock pot smoking era who are still hanging out in Houses of the Holy will enjoy Mike Campbell's guitar work, but that's nonsense. It's all rock and roll.

Digging this album a lot. Cool songs and the production is incredible.
