Anything past 1980 from Peter Cetera, when he went Satanic, was pretty hard to stomach, too.

I am a big fan of In The Air Tonight. I just wish I could find the version that they play on the radio with the bongos. It is so sexy.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around "The Seeker" by The Who being named on this thread. It isn't even the worst Who tune, much less one of the worst rock tunes of all time.

I mean, even their worst songs are better than other bands best. I'd gladly admit that they have some clunkers, but The Seeker is fucking awesome classic Who stuff.

My vote for worst Who song would be "Athena", and it is still better than all of TOTO's best moments threaded together.

I remember reading this Dylan Thomas essay on writing years ago and he basically said a bad piece of writing is bad, no big deal, a great piece is great, but there is nothing worse than a bad or even mediocre piece trying to be a great piece. He basically said that makes for the worst writing there is. Something like that, I'm not doing it justice.

Point being, for all the reasons Bo said and the one I just said up there, the Seeker is garbage. That song is all overblown ego and new age bullshit. Not to mention the fact that the song sounds like a tossed off out take of a band trying to rip off the Who. I love the Who, but when Townshend starts buying his own bullshit they go from real great to the worst band in about 1 second.

"I asked Bobby Dylan"

So stupid.

Can I nominate my own songs for this?

Pete Townshend on The Seeker:

"I suppose I like this least of all the stuff", wrote Townshend. "It suffered from being the first thing we did after Tommy, and also from being recorded a few too many times. We did it once at my home studio, then at IBC where we normally worked then with Kit Lambert producing. Then Kit had a tooth pulled, breaking his jaw, and we did it ourselves. The results are impressive. It sounded great in the mosquito-ridden swamp I made it up in, Florida at three in the morning drunk out of my brain with Tom Wright and John Wolf. But that's always where the trouble starts, in the swamp. The alligator turned into an elephant and finally stampeded itself to death on stages around England. I don't think we even got to play it in the States."

Always hated The Seeker. And most of Tommy. And much of Quadrophenia.

I can still get down with Who's Next occasionally, but most studio recordings of the Who post-Sell Out are lame. Sure they ripped it live, but the records were hit or miss. Early singles and Sell Out are they were the best band ever, though.

The Who are a strange beast. Who's Next, I think, changed my life when I was 12 years old, shook a few walls and almost blew a few speakers. I adored the Beatles and the Stones were great, but, it was the Who, who fucking rocked. They were reckless and fearless. When you look over their records, though, they are really pretty spotty and many times just downright goofy (sometimes intended, other times, sadly, not). Tommy was a disaster from the beginning and did not age well. Even their masterpiece, Who's Next has "The Song is Over" which has a moment, but, I always thought that the song wasn't over soon enough. I recorded them A to Z one weekend, when a classic rock station in Dayton played their entire catalog (yes- I was that much of a freaking nerd, not very shocking) and I listened back hundreds of times. I still think of them as one of the most inspirational bands in my life, but, for all I know that's owed to only a handful of brilliant and powerful songs. That's really all anyone can ask for. Most bands struggle their entire existence to put out one good collection of songs and come up short. If you look back and think "The Seeker" was the weakest of a batch of songs you were messing around with during one period of time, I'd say you did pretty not bad. Quadrophenia is a much more enjoyable listen for me than Tommy. Empty Glass and The Who by Numbers I still like a lot, too, but don't revisit very often. "Who Are You" I dug, basically, because I was 12 years old when I played it all of the time. "Guitar and Pen" and "Trick of the Light" are pretty darn silly.

See, I liked the fact that The Who could be silly and still be bad asses. "Guitar and Pen" is a a good tune. Then again, I also like "Boris the Spider," so.... yeah.

Sweet Home Alabama. Maybe I've just heard it too much?

Any of the "smooove jazzzzz" stuff. The songs that sound like air, and there is a freakin' triangle being played.

Mr Roboto. I cannot stand that dudes voice. What's his face. Or Come Sail Away.

REO Speedwagon. Everything. He should never sing a word that ends with "R". "For evrrrrrrrrr". There is no "E". I checked.

Any Nickleback or Creed or Puddle of Dumm or Seether or Stinkin' Fart (Linkin' Park) or Dave Matthews. Except for "Crash". Only because I like the feel of the drums in that song.

Tainted Love. I know, every one but me loves that song. Hate it.

Also, Fred Durst should be shot for his cover of Behind Blue Eyes.

Jukebox Hero by Foreigner. Dumbest lyrics ever. My dog could write better lyrics, and I don't even have a dog. Mine is dead.

I cannot stand Cake.

Smack My Bitch up by Prodigy. They were every thing that was wrong about 90s music.

Ob La Di, Ob La Da. LOVE the Beatles though.

We Built This City. This probably ranks as my personal #1 turd of all time.

Follow Me. Uncle Cracker. Stupid song. Stupid name.

Deep Blue Something. Beakfast at Tiffany's.

Europe. The Final Countdown. Wonder who would win in a fight? We Built This City vs The Final Countdown.

The Rembrandts. I'll Be There For You.

Any Spin Doctors. All that smiling. Ick. Steve Miller wannabes.

OH man. I have a lot more than this..........

The Who were really a singles band. The first 4 years are pretty unimpeachable, singles-wise ("Dogs", anyone?). "Sell Out" is a masterpiece. But after that it's pretty hit-and-miss. I think "Magic Bus" is where it started to go bad. I was obsessed with "Quadrophenia" when i was 15 but it doesn't really hold up, aside from "Dirty Jobs" and "Is It In My Head?".
About five years ago I got hooked on "By Numbers" for some reason, maybe because it's one of their only albums that hasn't been ravaged by classic rock radio. Just pulled it out again last week and guess what? It's not really that good. Definitely better than "The Seeker" and "Long Live Rock" though.

"I Can't Reach You" is one of the greatest songs ever writen, by the way.

5. No Rain - Blind Melon

All I can say is that this song is pretty lame. And because of it I completely wrote off a great band for many, many years. Until it was too late, really.

4. Bullet With Butterfly Wings - Smashing Pumpkins

Gayest display of pseudo-angst ever.

3. Green Day - Basket Case

No, I do not have that kind of time laying around.

2. Let's Get Rocked - Def Leppard

Nothing like hearing middle-aged millionaires complaining about their parents making them walk the dog and take out the trash

My all time least favorite song which I love to hate:

1. Shakedown : Bob Seger

Man what a hack job piece of crap, from a hack job piece of crap movie.
