What impressed me at this show: The incredible band and the incredibly lame crowd. What's wrong with people - they stand there and nod at a Dino Jr show? And it was not a bad Dino Jr show, it was a skull peeler. But experiencing this magic in a crowd full of uptight mid-westerners was a bit of a downer. The Akron show earlier this year at least drew a crowd of people who were willing to move around while the music played. Last night there wasn't even a push-n-shove pit up front - just more people standing around. Why?

I dunno... musically, I think it sounded completely amazing, mind-blowing, face-melting, but I was kinda disappointed that they barely acknowledged the crowd at all. Not like I wanted commentary on the "big win"or anything, just some interaction would have been nice. Just seemed two dimensional.

As far as people just standing around? This is Columbus. Anything other than a head bob is grounds for being sneered at.

I loved it, would have liked to have heard Raisins or The Wagon but really I thought it was a great show, I didn't so much mind the mellowness of the crowd.

I didn't really mind the crowd, but then again maybe I'm just used to crowds like that in Columbus. My only complaint is that they didn't play The Wagon.

Gib asks a similar, valid question in 1985's The Sure Thing. He very well could have said this to Columbus:

"What the hell's wrong with being stupid once in awhile? Does everything you do always have to be sensible? Haven't you ever thrown waterballoons off a roof? When you were a little kid didn't you ever sprinkle Ivory flakes on the living room floor 'cause you wanted to make it snow in July? Didn't you ever get really shitfaced and maybe make a complete fool of yourself and still have an excellent time?"

i actually enjoyed that they were pretty oblivious to the crowd. i didn't go to see j mascis and lou barlow make incredibly awkward jokes (which they invariably would have been). i went to see ridiculous guitar theatrics drenched in fuzz and purple light. so, yeah, great show.

and i mentioned to my friend about the lameness of the crowd, and he made a good point: most of the people there are 30-45 year-old slackers. this ain't a jonas brothers concert...

Totally, I don't know if anyone noticed but J doesn't quite move around like he used to either.

My only complaint has been the set list. I don't particularly need to see them play anything post-Lou B. I saw them play all that stuff in the 90s. I'd rather hear the first 3 albums and the 2 new ones. Freak Scene and Budge were highlights.

That being said, if they were going to play the post-Lou stuff, I would've loved to hear The Wagon too.

yer livin all over me=bug>where you been>more light(the fog)>green mind>dinosaur>gasfoodlodging>beyond>without a sound>farm>hand it over (or something) and you need fossils and whatever's cool with me too. also sebadoh vs helmet, good idea. all th records have amazing stuff on em just sometimes you have to skip around and keep in mind th only reasons to have th new ones are th whupass lou songs. if you can find th subpop wagon single th don fleming bside is fantastic so you know maybe get th first gumball record too and velvet monkeys rake sdtk and th deep wound reish and something by gobblehoof.

Its nice they're changing the set up.

Bug is easily my favorite Dinosaur Jr record. Green Mind is real good. You're Living All Over Me is good. The Fossils collection. I quite like the new one too. Over It is a pretty classic sounding Dinosaur jam.

i disagree. i think i like beyond best because it sounds like dinosaur jr without resorting fully to the slacker sludge of their 80s records. mascis' songwriting chops definitely got better as he progressed (save for the last couple of 90s DJr records). listening back to dinosaur, you're living... and bug, they all sound like the era they came from, but beyond doesn't date itself the same way.

the lou songs are pretty good, but i wouldn't throw away the mascis tunes on the last 2 records.

I got into them right around the time Where You Been came out so I was glad to see them play a few of those songs on Saturday night, especially Get Me. I've always loved that song.

Beyond
Farm

I dig the two new ones quite a bit but start at the beginning, they're even better in context.

Yes! there are so many good songs i didn't hear! i thought they sounded fantastic, probably the best i'd heard them, but there are so many good songs they neglected.

as for disappointment in the crowd i didn't really care. i was up top being old and cynical. i did think the show was way too short though. i've heard them play for 2 hours before.. maybe they're getting too old to play long shows.. :boohoo:

oh.. and the solos.. jesus. there has to be a time limit...

green mind is my favorite.
i get songs and albums confused after that.. but i like bug, where you been and living all over me. i like beyond a lot too.

there are neil young records that are less boring with lyrics that are only as worthless like half as much of the time. at least probably there are. i like these new dinosaur records they just aren't really rad.

and yeah you can sort of hear the era on bug & ylaom (well esp if you listened to them 40 times a day when they came out, but in the production a little as well...though i wish more records in general sounded like ylaom and i wish more dinosaur records sounded like bug) but it's a good thing and not overwhelming. it kind of transports you to a seperate place in time that's both then and now rather than um, like doing what the 1st smiths record does which is just make you feel the dullness of england, 1983. or something. this is the hippie-est thing i have said since 1994. apropos.
