Yo La Tengo Shines Up 'Summer' Songs

Yo La Tengo will release the follow-up to 2000's "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out" April 8 via Matador. In contrast to last year's moody instrumental set "The Sounds of the Sounds of the Science," the new set, dubbed "Summer Sun" is being touted by the label as the band's "most ambitious album to date." It was recorded in Nashville with longtime producer Roger Moutenot.

"Exploring the sunny landscapes of summer, in every imaginable mode of music," is how the Matador Web site describes Yo La Tengo's 11th album. In a post to the label's official message board, label co-president Gerard Cosloy called the new release "a bit all over the musical map. It won't sound entirely out of place alongside 'And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out.' [It's] a subtle stylistic shift, I'd say. Swinging stuff."

The disc's first extract, "Don't Have To Be So Sad" is available for download on the Matador site. Further titles include the 10-minute jam "Let's Be Still," "How To Make a Baby Elephant Float," "Moonrock Mambo," and "Little Eyes."

In support of the disc, the band will hit the road beginning March 10 in Carrboro, N.C. As previously reported, Yo La Tengo will also play June 21 in Los Angeles as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, to be curated by "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening.

"And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out" debuted at No. 4 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and has sold 114,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
