I don't quiet know how that's "slipped in" to the English language; but it's an almost acceptable explanation of surprise these days.

Does tend to worry you Yanks though :)

(But not as much as the phrase "I'm going outside to smoke a fag" which is an exteremly common phrase here, but rather scary over where you are!!)

i'm just finishing up reading "Down and Out in Paris and London."
an older book, and some of the terms used in there are probably out of date, but i do love the differences in our slang.

but i'm glad i don't smoke.
