When we first went in to IRAQ... Many americans believed that Saddam had WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.. why? Because BUSH and his cronies- as well as a lot of the media flat out told us.

As we have found out, this was a LIE.

How does cognitive dissonance play a role?

Well... normally, when Cog Dis. rears its head people usually do one of TWO THINGS:

A) They change their SCHEMA or WORLDVIEW... in the case of many Americans like my parents, they realized that though they had supported the war on the basis of WMD, they were wrong and that BUSH and his cronies were LYING.

B)They create an alternate Schema or STORY so they don't have to admit being wrong ... in the case of BUSH SUPPORTERS... they shifted the reasoning from WMD to "IRAQI FREEDOM". In the case of our subjects in the comics, we have a textbook case of someone who "felt bad" when someone reminded him there were no WMD. it is these kind of "bad feelings" and "inner conflict" that we call cognitive dissonance.


Backwards- BY EVERY MEANS, the concept of COGNITIVE DISSONANCE applies to everyone.... we all face challenges to our worldviews everyday...

...but, whats FUNNY and RELEVANT about C.D. is that it had a big role in the election and that more Americans opted to create an ALTERNATE STORY than mediate their FALSE BELIEFS....

how is that? probably not perfect, but i find C.D. immensely interesting as i am a grad student in psych.
