I had to internally rant and fume about this, and sort out my thoughts to prevent myself from spouting off anti-christian rhetoric and posting some giant Baphomet picture with FUCK YOU written across it. Now I am calmer.
How about this, creating a separation between "marriage" and "civil unions" is the very heart of the problem. The fact that literalist Christianity has so permeated our society and government to make it so we can't have one thing, "Marriage", and then if you choose to opt into a set of rules that come with whatever religion or set of moral values you choose to obey, this is COMPLETELY FUCKED.
The fact that we would have to say, "Well, you're gay, not christian, or don't fit into whatever mold the majority has agreed upon, therefore your union isn't really Marriage." is BULLSHIT.
I don't give a fuck if the majority of the population is Christian. Just because it might be a majority doesn't make it "right".
If we live in the goddamn "land of the free", people who are born gay, yep BORN gay, should be able to live like everybody else. Who are they harming? Whose goddamn toes are they stepping on if they want to live in a committed relationship and get the same benefits as a couple who happen to be of different sexes?
See? Calmer.
