First off, mad props to Joe for speaking his mind, especially in this message board.

Yeah, it was real courageous to be so vaguely supportive of those who are bending a lot of us over…

Second of all, if I stopped liking bands because of their values, I'd be listening to silence. As an example, I fucking hate drugs, but when it comes to the music someone makes, I don't let someone's addictions (recovering or otherwise) get in the way of what I like or don't like.

And that's fine for you. But I don't see a big old bag of marijuana denying you of your basic civil rights.

This is a good point made by Beth.

it amazes me that people are more concerned about Morality than Equality.

I guess the While are against Equality.

I like how Joe states this is his own opinion and it some how gets equated to the Whiles (when he specifically states that him and his bass player don't agree on these very issues).

So what's fine for you? You background check every member of every band before you determine you like them?

You read Rolling Stone and interviews with all bands and say, "Hey, this band shares my morals, I will like them?"

Where do you draw the line?

I say it's easy to draw a line if the band members have expressed politics you don't agree with.

While I may enjoy Screwdriver's music, I don't buy their records nor support their politics.

What I'm tring to say is: The Whiles are the Screwdriver of Columbus.

(cough)

A band member. Seems some of the other guys agree with you. Maybe you could just sit so the tree at Andyman's blocks the guy you don't like.

Obviously I don't choose the bands that I listen to based on whether or not their values match mine. But if a band/band member chooses to voice an opinion that I feel is morally wrong- I will no longer support them. It's pretty simple really and it crosses all venues of my life- not just music.

Would you listen to a skinhead band because you liked the music? Would you buy clothes that you knew a 5-year old in a sweat-shop made? I would not.

Beth- I'm at a loss for words. You are one of the most closed minded people I have ever virtually met.

Mikepoint3- You're just a virtually mean person. What's with the ialac tag tearing bro?

To everyone who PM'd me with intelligent thoughts, I sincerely apprecaite it.

Time to see Dylan,.

you will no longer support them? sounds like you've never supported them to begin with, instead you want to trash them because they have different values than you.

sounds familiar!!!!

I never said I supported The Whiles. I said I never would. I made no personal attacks on Joe. I don't know him- just his beliefs- (which he shared)- which I attacked. I didn't trash "them" (I assume you're talking about the band- who according to a number of people including Joe- do not share the same values). And as I said before, he had to expect some negative feedback. I'm not going to pat this guy on the back for voting for Bush and telling me about it.

Look, I think it's great that you want to take a stand on the issues, but is this really the way to go about it? In the grand scheme of things, is your not attending a Whiles show going to change the country or even positively influence anyone to your point of view? Is this really where you want to put your energy? I mean, have at it, and think I'm a jerk and all, but this is petty bullshit, and making me all the more sympathetic to his statement, regardless of whether I agree with his politics. And God help me if this little exchange turns me in into The Whiles latest champion. OMGFLIPFLOPPER!!11

It doesn't amaze me that some people are concerned about "equality" and not morality. Kurt Vonnegut wrote Harrison Bergeron specifically to address that viewpoint.

My advice to people who want "equality": Try working harder and achieving more. If you do that, you might end up being "equal" to the people who currently earn more, do more, and accomplish more than you do.

Every time I get into my Sec179-deducted Land Rover I thank G-d that George W Bush is standing up for the values which made America great. I believe we were granted the victory because the Almighty Christ saw that Kerry is a babykiller.

Congratulations on typing the most ironic statement of 2004. No small feat, let me tell you.

The man writes a cogent, well-thought statement defending his vote, and you stick your fingers in your ears and yell "BUSH IS MUSSOLINI!!!" For you to speak of tolerance is not only laughable, it's an egregious misrepresentation of your chosen candidate's beliefs.

And by the way, Senator Kerry believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman-or did you not hear John Edwards say that 87 times?

Yeah, I was one of those people choosing from the lesser of two evils. Kerry did however acknowlege that homosexuality is not a choice, and also said he would not legislate people's lives.

You called me the jerk. I said nothing of the sort. I'm sorry if you think responding to a post (on a discussion thread) is counter-productive. I think everyone is getting so defensive because they are in love with The Whiles. But you know we can't all have the same musical taste- which is probably why I've never seen these guys live. I don't think this is petty. Futile perhaps.

Yes, it's because I'm in love with The Whiles. My love for The Whiles is boundless and well-known.

Personally, you lost all credibility when this happened. I was just letting Joe know that I will never support his band because he voted for Bush. People can think this is ridiculous all they want.

I can't take you seriously after you call me a jerk.

Cookie wrote:

I don't really have an answer to that. I personally can't imagine being comfortable enough to create music with people who support homophobic leaders- but I'm gay- which I assume is not the case with any of the members of the Whiles. Maybe their feelings about Bush are not as personal as mine, but I'd rather not make that assumption. My point is, I'm not trying to start a campaign against the band itself, or Joe for that matter. What I'm saying is pretty simple and it's honestly rather frustrating that people are getting so upset about it- I will not support anything that I think is socially/politically corrupt, even if it is as seemingly convoluted as a band member voting for Bush.
