Happy Bday Jon. I've been on the left coast, or else I would've been there!

I agree that this article was pretty dead-on. I wonder if the chamber of commerce leaders understand that much of the charm and appeal of Columbus is that it doesn't need an identity to prosper?

Columbus' "identity problem" lies in the fact that everyone's always trying to define it with some dumb campaign.

People don't go to, or live in, places because of their slogans. They generally go places for friends, family, food, jobs, climate, sight-seeing or water-related recreation.

The city of San Diego paid a bunch of douchebags a bazillion dollars last year for it's new slogan: Happy Happens. Ridiculous. I don't think it's the slogan that will motivate anyone to buy a plane ticket.

Is it possible to tell an entire city, "Bitch, be cool"?

on three separate occasions over the weekend i was serving folks in from out of town, asking for the cool shit to do and what columbus was like and all that shit, and i got to drop the best line i've ever read on columbusundergound: "columbus: it's a great place to live but you wouldn't want to visit there."

that should be our fucking city slogan. it tells more truth than you realize. there's a million great things about this town, but you'll never find it on a short visit . . .

Saw this article over the weekend. I thought it was actually pretty good: its real slant of course wasn't about Columbus but about how cities often struggle with branding images, which, to be fair, has been a long-time problem for the city's utter lack of marketing panache.

I think article was very fair, and did mention a few of Columbus' strong points, which (besides football and the zoo), includes a good economy and history as a progressive leader. It practically goes to editorializing lengths to commend the city : "How many cities can boast of having one of the largest county fairs and also one of the largest gay pride parades?" I consider that a compliment.

I'd consider moving back* if that were the official city slogan. Although in the interest of gender neutrality, what about "Columbus: Chill the Fuck Out, yo"

* and if you had a train system that worked, better buses and bike lanes, fewer football fans, more jobs in my industry.... ah, fuck it.
