More than 45 people work for The Dispatch? I had no idea that a newspaper staff is that large. That is unfortunate news though.

I hope the papers can survive. I love to read the paper. I do NOT like to read news on the Internet all the time. I certainly wouldn't enjoy looking at the NYT on my computer. There has to be a way for them to survive. Someone suggested that papers start charging people per article. I'm down with that.

There's few, if any, ways to implement micropayments in a user-centric fashion.

Though there's plenty of issues, advertising-supported peer-production should probably be the locus of activity for news-gathering. The editorial job of the "Newspaper" would be curating this peer-production.

Publishing/printing a hard-copy newspaper, daily, is a terribly crude, 19th-Century enterprise. Those people making candles and horse-drawn carriages had to eventually find a new line of work. Such is progress.

Sorry about your luck, Dispatch. Maybe you'd save more on printing costs than you earn by artificially keeping circulation numbers up if you'd actually STOP delivering the paper to people who don't want it anymore (like me). I've asked again and again for weekends only and you know it. You're mistaken if you think I'm obliged to pay for a paper just because you put it on my doorstep.

The idea of "pay per article" is kind of like a'la carte pricing for cable: You'll have a few runaway successes, while fringe content would likely become prohibitively expensive without the larger subscriber base to help offset their costs.

A PPA Dispatch would lead to Ohio State sports coverage being repsonsible for 90% of the business. I just can't see anyone over the age of 40 caring enough to pay even one thin dime to read what Joe Blundo has to say from week to week when blogs are free any more than I could see someone paying their share of the cost to get Sleuth or Hallmark Movie Channel on Time Warner with Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc. out there.

rite. alot of journalism courses in school have pretty much dropped print journalism from the curriculum. it's not going to be shokking when the nytimes is a collectors item.

This whole concept of hen-pecking information has huge mind-boggling implications. An Editor decides what is news-worthy and puts the information on our doorsteps. It is all in front of you for your eyes to scan and determine what interests you and what doesn't. While I am the first to admit, I only get the Sunday and usually barely do more than scan the headlines, the idea of only getting information form the internet, scares the crap out of me. It is too easy to be complacent.

Not only that, but it's a lot easier to find unsourced material represented as fact.
