i'm super-psyched about the martin rucker era at tight end. i mean, it's a great net gain to replace a pro bowl tight end who was the only player opposing defenses had to scheme for with a fourth-round draft pick who barely has a handful of career receptions!

martin rucker is a bootleg version of kellen winslow. rucker missed the first 11 games of his rookie season because of -- you guessed it -- injury problems. he came out of college as a tight end noted for great hands and -- you guessed it -- a near total inability to block anyone. rucker lacks winslow's competitive streak, which will help him avoid coming off as a jackass in the media, but i would keep a pro-bowl caliber player who also happens to be a jackass over a lesser version of that player. terry pluto says the browns have depth at tight end with heiden and rucker, assuming heiden stays healthy, but that's also assuming rucker stays healthy and that rucker surpasses his lofty 2008 season totals of two catches for seventeen total yards. heiden is old and injury-prone and rucker is unproven/untested and injury-prone. we basically went from having a tight end who, when healthy (a big question mark, granted) was someone who was our lone reliable threat to opposing defenses to no longer having a legit tight end on the roster.

i've liked terry pluto's work (faith columns aside) since his glory days with the akron beacon journal, but i'm sick of him and the rest of the cleveland media giving the browns a free pass. pat mcmanamon is the only one with any credibility anymore (for the record, he loves the winslow trade).

the team sucks, randy lerner is incompetent at running an nfl franchise, and the new coaching staff/front office are a near carbon copy of the old regime (head coach = belichick disciple, gm = former ravens #2 guy). trading a tight end twelve months removed from the pro bowl for a second round draft pick (a draft the staff and front office is inadequately prepared for) and getting rid of your best defender -- who's also one of the top two or three nose tackles in the nfl -- isn't a start worth commending.

did i mention they're not going to trade anderson, so it's going to be another year of flip-flopping between quinn and anderson at qb?

its all about the system, teams with players willing to buy into their systems have a far better chance of winning then a collection of names do.

this team was 4 -12 after being the flukiest 10- 6 team in nfl history. Winslow is not only addition by subtraction at this point but we need the picks badly
