SO WHO ON HER EVER SKATED A CURB?
DID A HANDRAIL?
i thnk that a more apt comparison would be who here ever took a jackhammer and broke off a piece of curb, cause skating doesn't equate to actually vandalizing something in a destructive manner, at least not as long as you are careful.
and no, i don't skate.
obviously.
skating cause lots of unsightly damage to property..
when i did grinds on marble ledges, i never wondered who owned it...
doubt most skaters do?
are you guys against street skateboarding as well?
I think with a comparison to skating damage, it comes down to how obvious the damage is.
In my opinion a cracked curb or a scufted rail is less obvious than a big pink and purple name.
Skateboarding does subtractive damage. Clipping away little by little over time, so it's less noticeable day to day.
But when a tag goes up that is in complete contrast to it's surroundings, people take notice instantly and start to bitch.
both do damage, but one is just way more overt about it.
Fuck, I've skated for years... I've put up band stickers. But I've always tried to be tastedful in where I did it.
And there is no accounting for taste and people will always bitch.
so you have never been kicked out of skate spot for skating related damage to a spot.........
this intent shit is killing me.
yes graffiti writers intend on ridding the world of small businesses.
they get 25 cents off at starbucks..
hey at least starbucks gives their employess health insurance.
Truthfully, I'm not sure if I was kicked out of a skate spot for doing damage or for just being a skater. I have been kicked out of places, but I never really stopped to asked why. I knew, I was a skater.
I'm not really against graffiti. I feel conflicted about the whole subject. I know a lot of dudes who used put up pieces all around town and I can't say they were bad guys. I can say they were artists.
People ultimately change their environment for better or worse, mostly, as history has shown, for worse.
It sucks that graffiti can cause damage to personal property and it's rude to and costly to do so.
I wish graffiti artist would target government buildings only. I say fuck it. Their already taking 30-40% of my money -- I'd rahter have that money be used to clean up some art that will be put up again than for some fucking war.
I am pro OBEY GIANT - (shepard fairey). I've hung with that dude and he has a definate message and political slant. I watched him post the 8 foot by 8 foot GIANT posters on each side of the Newport during a motorhead show and had no problems with that. In fact, I loved that. That weekend, Shepard went all around town bombing his new Giant / Misfist hybrid logo. It was fucking sweet.
He did it with paper and wheat paste.
He knew what he was saying.
We drank wine.
Cool dude.
